# Account-based sales development (ABSD)

In short

Account-based sales development is an outbound prospecting model in which sales development reps (SDRs) are assigned named target accounts and work them through coordinated, personalized outreach to multiple people at each company. The goal is a first meeting with the right stakeholders.

It differs from classic lead-based prospecting, where reps work a queue of individual leads as they arrive. It differs from account-based selling, which covers the full deal cycle run by account executives. Here the focus is the front of the funnel: researching, reaching, and booking meetings with chosen accounts.

## How account-based sales development works

### Account assignment

Each SDR owns a defined set of accounts, often 30 to 100, chosen from the target account list. Ownership is by account, not by lead, so two reps never contact the same company independently.

### Research before outreach

The rep spends time on each account before sending anything: recent news, hiring, tech stack, and the people likely to care. This research becomes the opening line of a message.

### Coordinated multi-channel sequences

Email, phone, and social touches are planned across several contacts at the account. A message to a VP can reference a conversation with a manager on the same team.

---

## Example

Say an SDR owns 40 accounts. For each, they pick three contacts, write one account-level hook, and run a 12-day sequence on all three. After the sequence they review which accounts engaged and move the best into a meeting or into nurture.

---

## Metrics to track

* **Accounts engaged:** The share of assigned accounts where at least one contact replied or took a meeting.
* **Contacts per account:** How many people were reached, a check on multi-threading.
* **Meetings per account:** Booked meetings divided by accounts worked, rather than per lead.
* **Meeting quality:** Whether meetings reach the buying group and convert into opportunities.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Too many accounts per rep:** Personalization collapses when a rep cannot research each account.
* **Targeting one contact:** A single reply from a junior contact rarely moves a deal.
* **No handoff rules:** AEs need the account context, not just a calendar invite.
* **Wrong list:** Strong research on a poor-fit account still wastes the effort.

## Account-based sales development FAQs

**What is account-based sales development?**

Account-based sales development is an outbound model where SDRs own a named list of target accounts and run coordinated, personalized outreach to several contacts at each one, aiming to book meetings with the right stakeholders rather than working individual leads.

**How is account-based sales development different from traditional SDR work?**

Traditional SDR work processes leads one at a time, usually by volume. Account-based sales development assigns accounts, researches each one, and contacts multiple people in a coordinated way. Success is measured by accounts engaged and meeting quality, not only activity counts.

**How many accounts should an account-based SDR work?**

There is no fixed number. It depends on how much research each account needs. A common starting point is a few dozen accounts per rep, then adjusting based on how well personalization holds up and how many accounts engage.

**Who owns the account after an account-based SDR books a meeting?**

Usually the account executive takes over the opportunity, while the SDR keeps working other contacts at the account to support multi-threading. Agree this handoff and what context passes along before outreach starts.
