[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Account-based selling ABM # Account-based selling In short Account-based selling is a sales method in which account executives plan and run each deal as an account-level campaign. They map the buying group, tailor messaging to each person, and coordinate resources around winning and growing that one customer. It is the sales-side counterpart of account-based marketing (ABM). Account-based sales development covers the early outreach to book meetings; account-based selling covers the active deal through close and expansion. ## Core elements of account-based selling ### An account plan A short document per account: goals, the problem you solve, the opportunity size, the people involved, risks, and next steps with dates. ### Buying group mapping Identify who decides, who influences, who uses the product, and who can block it. Update the map as the deal moves. ### Tailored value messaging Each stakeholder hears about the outcome they care about. Finance hears payback; operations hears workflow impact. ### Cross-team coordination Marketing, customer success, and sales engineering support the account with content, events, and proof points matched to the plan. --- ## How to start * **Pick the accounts:** Choose a small tier of high-value accounts where a custom plan is worth the effort. * **Write the plan:** Start with one page per account and review it in deal meetings. * **Map contacts:** Aim to know at least three or four stakeholders before the proposal. * **Align with marketing:** Share the account list so ads and content reach the same people. * **Review regularly:** Revisit each plan on a fixed schedule, for example every two weeks. --- ## Example Say an AE is working a regional retailer. The champion in operations likes the product, but the plan shows no contact in finance. The AE asks the champion for an intro, shares a payback summary with the CFO, and brings a customer reference from a similar retailer to the final call. --- ## Common mistakes * **Applying it to every deal:** Small, fast deals do not justify a custom plan. * **Single-threaded deals:** Relying on one champion leaves the deal exposed if they leave. * **Plans that go stale:** A plan nobody updates is paperwork, not strategy. --- ## Account-based selling FAQs **What is account-based selling?** Account-based selling is a sales approach where account executives build a tailored plan for each target account, map the whole buying group, and coordinate messaging and resources around winning that account, instead of treating it as a single lead. **What is the difference between account-based selling and account-based marketing?** Account-based marketing is run by marketing, using targeted campaigns to engage chosen accounts. Account-based selling is run by sales, using account plans and stakeholder strategy to win the deal. The two work best on the same account list. **When should you use account-based selling?** Use it for high-value or complex deals with several stakeholders and long sales cycles. For low-priced, high-volume deals with a single buyer, the effort of a custom account plan usually costs more than it returns. **What should an account plan include in account-based selling?** An account plan should list the goal, the business problem, deal size, the people in the buying group and their roles, risks, competitors in play, and dated next steps. Keep it short enough that reps will keep it current.
