[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Account coverage RevOps & Pipeline # Account coverage In short Account coverage is the share of your target accounts that have an owner, known contacts, and recent outreach. It answers a simple question: of the accounts we say we want, how many are we actually working? Coverage has two sides. Account-level coverage asks whether each account is assigned and touched. Contact-level coverage asks whether you reach enough of the buying group inside each one. ## How to measure it Start from a defined target account list, then measure how much of it has real activity. * **Owner coverage:** Percent of target accounts assigned to a rep or team. * **Contact coverage:** Average number of relevant contacts per account, and whether key roles are present. * **Activity coverage:** Percent of accounts with outreach or engagement in the last 30 to 90 days. --- ## An example Say a team has 500 target accounts. 450 are assigned, 300 have at least three known contacts, and 200 were contacted this quarter. Owner coverage looks strong at 90 percent, but activity coverage is only 40 percent. The gap tells the team to focus on working accounts, not on assigning more. --- ## How to improve coverage ### Fix the account list first A bloated list makes coverage look poor. Cut accounts that do not match your ICP, then tier the rest so the best accounts get the most attention. ### Balance territories If one rep holds far more accounts than they can work, coverage drops. Rebalance by account count, potential, and complexity. ### Fill contact gaps Find missing roles in the buying group, such as the budget owner or a technical evaluator, and add verified contacts. ### Cover with the right channels Not every account needs a rep. Lower-tier accounts can be covered by marketing programs while reps focus on top-tier accounts. --- ## Common mistakes * **Counting assignment as coverage:** An account with an owner but no outreach is not covered. * **Single-threading:** One contact per account leaves the deal exposed if that person leaves or goes quiet. * **Equal effort for every account:** Spread thin effort wastes time on low-fit accounts. --- ## Account coverage vs. pipeline coverage Account coverage measures how well you work your target accounts. Pipeline coverage compares open pipeline value to quota. Strong account coverage tends to feed pipeline coverage, but they measure different things. --- ## Account coverage FAQs **What is account coverage?** Account coverage is the share of your target accounts that have an assigned owner, known contacts, and recent outreach. It shows how thoroughly your team is working the accounts it has chosen to pursue. **How do you measure account coverage?** Measure it against a defined target account list. Track the percent of accounts with an owner, the number of relevant contacts per account, and the percent with outreach or engagement in the last 30 to 90 days. **What is the difference between account coverage and pipeline coverage?** Account coverage measures how many of your target accounts you actively work. Pipeline coverage compares the value of open pipeline with quota. One is about effort across accounts, and the other is about whether you can hit your number. **How can you improve account coverage?** Trim the list to accounts that fit your ICP, tier them, rebalance territories so reps can work what they own, fill missing buying group contacts, and cover lower-tier accounts with marketing programs instead of rep time.
