# Account expansion

In short

Account expansion is the practice of increasing the revenue you earn from a customer you already have. It happens when the customer adds seats, rolls out to more teams or regions, buys additional products, or moves to a higher plan.

In ABM, expansion treats existing customers as target accounts with their own plan. It is broader than cross-selling, which is selling a different product, and than upselling, which is a higher tier of the same product. Expansion includes both, plus wider adoption inside the company.

## Ways accounts expand

* **Seats:** More users in the same team.
* **Departments:** A new team adopts the product after the first one succeeds.
* **Geographies:** Rollout to other regions or subsidiaries.
* **Products:** Additional products or modules.
* **Plans:** A move to a higher tier with more features or limits.

---

## How to plan an expansion

### Map the customer organization

Draw the company structure. Mark where you are used, where you are not, and who runs the unused areas. Account hierarchy data helps when the customer has many subsidiaries.

### Check health first

Do not push expansion at an account with unresolved problems. Check usage, support issues, and sponsor satisfaction.

### Find the trigger

Look for reasons to act: a new executive, a new project, hiring in a target team, or product usage near a limit.

### Use the champion

Ask your current champion to introduce you to the next team. A warm introduction beats a cold approach.

---

## Example

Say a company bought your tool for its customer support team. Support leaders report faster response times. You ask for an introduction to the success team, share the support results as proof, and run a pilot with the success team. A rollout across both teams follows if the pilot meets its goals.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Selling before value is proven:** Expansion follows results the customer can point to.
* **Relying on one contact:** If your sponsor leaves, the expansion path closes.
* **No owner:** Decide whether customer success, account management, or sales leads the work.
* **Ignoring usage data:** Usage shows who is ready and who is at risk.

## Account expansion FAQs

**What is account expansion?**

Account expansion is growing the revenue you earn from an existing customer. It happens through more seats, adoption by more teams or regions, additional products, or a higher plan, rather than by winning a new customer.

**What is the difference between account expansion and upselling?**

Upselling means selling a higher tier or more of the same product. Account expansion is wider: it includes upselling, cross-selling other products, and spreading adoption to new teams, regions, or subsidiaries within the same customer.

**How do you identify account expansion opportunities?**

Review product usage, new hires and leadership changes, customer projects, and teams that do not yet use your product. Map the customer organization and ask your champion about other groups with the same problem.

**Who is responsible for account expansion?**

It varies by company. Customer success, account managers, or account executives may own it. What matters is one named owner per account, a shared plan, and clear rules for who contacts which person.
