# Account hierarchy

In short

An account hierarchy is a structure that links related company records, such as a global parent, its regional subsidiaries, divisions, and local offices, into a tree. Each record keeps its own data while pointing to the record above it.

In a CRM, the hierarchy lets teams roll up pipeline, contacts, and revenue to the top-level parent and decide who owns which part of a large organization.

## Why account hierarchy matters

* **Avoids channel conflict:** Two reps do not unknowingly call different divisions of the same company.
* **Shows the true buying group:** Budget may sit at the parent while users sit in a subsidiary.
* **Enables expansion plays:** A win in one business unit becomes a reference for the others.
* **Cleans reporting:** Pipeline and revenue roll up to the real customer, not scattered records.

---

## Typical levels

### Ultimate parent

The top company in the structure. Often the legal owner and the place where enterprise contracts are signed.

### Subsidiaries and divisions

Separate legal entities or business units, often with their own budgets and buyers.

### Locations

Individual offices or sites. Useful for territory and field sales.

---

## How to build one

Start with your strategic and named accounts, not the whole database.

* **Match on domain:** Group records that share a primary domain.
* **Add parent links:** Use a parent account field in the CRM and fill it from a reliable source.
* **Define rules:** Decide who owns children when a parent is assigned, and how contacts are shared.
* **Review after M&A:** Acquisitions change structure, so schedule periodic checks.

---

## Example

Say a manufacturer has a European and a North American subsidiary, both in your CRM as unrelated accounts. One rep is nurturing a plant manager in Europe while another is cold calling the same group in the US. Linking both to the parent shows the overlap and lets the team plan one coordinated approach.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Hierarchies everywhere:** Deep trees for small companies add upkeep without value.
* **Stale links:** Mergers and divestitures break relationships if nobody updates them.
* **Unclear ownership:** Without rules, child accounts get assigned inconsistently.

## Account hierarchy FAQs

**What is an account hierarchy in sales?**

An account hierarchy in sales is a structure that links a parent company to its subsidiaries, divisions, and offices. It shows how the organization is built, so reps can coordinate outreach and understand where decisions and budgets sit.

**How do you set up an account hierarchy in a CRM?**

Use the parent account field to link each child to its parent, starting with strategic accounts. Match records by domain, fill parent links from a reliable data source, and define ownership and contact-sharing rules for children.

**Why is account hierarchy important for ABM?**

Account-based programs target buying groups, and large buying groups often span several entities. A hierarchy shows which entities belong together, so campaigns, ownership, and reporting treat the group as one account instead of unrelated records.

**What is the difference between a parent account and a subsidiary?**

A parent account is the company that owns or controls other entities, while a subsidiary is an entity owned by the parent. In a CRM, subsidiaries are child records linked to the parent record.
