[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Account intelligence ABM # Account intelligence In short Account intelligence is the practice of continuously gathering, combining, and interpreting information about the companies you sell to. It covers company facts, buying committee members, technology, news, intent and engagement, and your own history with the account. It is the system and habit behind account insights. Insights are the individual conclusions; account intelligence is the repeatable process and data that produces them. It is narrower than sales intelligence, which also covers individual contacts and leads across the whole market. ## What account intelligence includes * **Firmographics and structure:** Size, industry, subsidiaries, and parent-child relationships. * **Buying group:** Who the decision makers, champions, and influencers are. * **Technology:** What they use today and what they added recently. * **Signals:** Hiring, funding, leadership changes, and intent activity. * **Relationship history:** Past deals, meetings, and open conversations. --- ## How to put it to work ### Decide what reps need Keep it to the facts that change an action. A fifty-field profile that nobody reads has no value. ### Bring data into one view Put intelligence in the CRM or the tool reps already open. Avoid asking them to check five systems. ### Keep it fresh Set refresh rules. Contacts change jobs and companies change priorities, so intelligence ages quickly. ### Connect it to plays Tie specific findings to specific actions: a new executive triggers an outreach play, a competitor tool adoption triggers a comparison message. --- ## Example Say a team sells security software to mid-size banks. Their account intelligence shows, for each bank, the head of security, the current vendor, recent audit news, and open security roles. Before a call, the rep spends five minutes on that view and opens with a question about the audit instead of a feature list. --- ## Where it helps in ABM It supports choosing which accounts to target, mapping the buying group, writing relevant messages, and timing outreach. It also helps customer teams find expansion paths inside existing customers. --- ## Common mistakes * **Data without decisions:** Collecting for its own sake. * **Single-source reliance:** Cross-check important facts. * **No ownership:** Someone must own data quality and refresh. * **Privacy blind spots:** Handle personal data in line with your applicable rules. --- ## Account intelligence FAQs **What is account intelligence?** Account intelligence is the ongoing gathering and analysis of information about target companies, including their structure, buying group, technology, signals, and your history with them, so teams can prioritize and approach accounts well. **What is the difference between account intelligence and sales intelligence?** Account intelligence focuses on understanding specific companies and their buying groups. Sales intelligence is broader and also covers individual contacts and leads across the market. Many teams use both, with account intelligence guiding ABM work. **What data goes into account intelligence?** Typical inputs are company facts and structure, key contacts, technology in use, hiring and leadership changes, news, intent or engagement activity, and your own deals and conversations. Choose the data that changes what your team does. **How can teams use account intelligence in ABM?** Teams use it to select and tier target accounts, map buying groups, write relevant messages, time outreach to signals, and plan expansion within customers. It works best when surfaced inside the CRM where reps already work.
