[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Account penetration ABM # Account penetration In short Account penetration is the share of an account's potential that you have actually captured. It compares what the account buys from you today with what it could buy, measured by revenue, products, business units, seats, or locations. Teams use it to find existing customers with the largest untapped room to grow. It is a customer-side measure, unlike market penetration, which looks at your share across a whole market. ## How to measure account penetration There is no single formula. Pick the measure that fits how your product is sold and apply it consistently. ### Revenue based Current annual spend divided by estimated total potential spend. Potential comes from account size, headcount, or a benchmark customer of similar size. ### Seat or usage based Licensed or active seats divided by the number of people who could use the product. ### Product based Number of your products the account uses out of those relevant to it. ### Coverage based Business units, teams, or locations using the product out of the total in the account. --- ## Example Say a company sells a collaboration tool with 4 teams out of 12 relevant teams at a customer using it. Coverage penetration is 4 of 12, about a third. The account owner now has a concrete target: find the sponsors in the other eight teams. --- ## How to increase penetration ### Map the account Identify teams and stakeholders not yet using the product. An account map shows where you have no presence. ### Find the use case Look at why current teams adopted and match that story to the next team. ### Use champions Ask satisfied users to introduce you internally and share results. ### Time it Reorganizations, new budgets, and renewals open windows for expansion. ### Coordinate sales, marketing, and customer success Expansion is rarely a single rep job. Aligned messaging and shared account insight help. --- ## Why it matters Selling into an existing customer usually costs less effort than winning a new logo, because trust, security review, and procurement are already in place. Low penetration in a happy account is often the nearest source of new revenue. --- ## Common mistakes * **Guessing potential:** If the denominator is a guess, the ratio is meaningless. Document how potential is estimated. * **Ignoring satisfaction:** Pushing expansion into an unhappy account raises churn risk. * **Mixing definitions:** Changing the measure between teams or quarters makes trends unreadable. * **Confusing it with market penetration:** The first is per account, the second is per market. --- ## Account penetration FAQs **What is account penetration?** Account penetration is how much of an account's buying potential you have captured. It compares what a customer spends or uses today with what it could spend or use, measured by revenue, seats, products, or business units. **How do you calculate account penetration?** Divide current spend or usage by the account's estimated total potential. For example, if a customer uses your product in 4 of 12 relevant teams, coverage penetration is about 33 percent. Choose one measure and apply it consistently across accounts. **What is the difference between account penetration and market penetration?** Account penetration looks inside a single customer to see how much of its potential you serve. Market penetration looks across a whole market to see what share of potential customers you have won. One measures depth, the other measures reach. **How can you increase account penetration?** Map the account to find teams without your product, reuse the success story from teams already using it, ask champions for introductions, and time outreach to renewals or reorganizations. Keep sales, marketing, and customer success aligned on the account.
