# Account selection

In short

Account selection is the process of choosing which companies a team will pursue with account-based tactics. It turns a large universe of possible customers into a short list that sales and marketing agree to focus on.

It comes first in an account-based program. Every later step, from research to campaigns to outreach, depends on whether the right accounts were chosen. Account prioritization then ranks the chosen accounts.

## How to select accounts

### 1. Define the ideal customer profile

Set the firmographic and technographic traits of your best customers. This defines who is eligible.

### 2. Build the universe

List all companies that match the profile. This is your total addressable account pool.

### 3. Add fit and timing data

Layer on signals such as growth, hiring, tech changes, or intent to separate strong candidates from weak ones.

### 4. Apply capacity limits

Decide how many accounts your team can work well. A small team might pick 50; a larger program might pick several hundred.

### 5. Get sales and marketing agreement

Review the list together. Reps know accounts the data cannot see, and marketing knows which accounts it can reach.

## Selection criteria to consider

* **Fit:** Does the company look like your best customers?
* **Potential:** How much revenue could it realistically produce?
* **Timing:** Is there an event or signal suggesting a buying window?
* **Reachability:** Can you identify and contact the right people?
* **Strategic value:** Would a win bring a reference, a new segment, or a foothold?

---

## Example

Say a team sells to software companies and has 2,000 matches in its ICP. It scores them on fit and recent hiring in sales roles, then keeps the top 100 for an account-based program and leaves the rest in standard campaigns. A quarterly review swaps accounts that have not engaged for new candidates.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Selecting too many:** A long list dilutes focus and defeats the point of account-based work.
* **Picking by gut or by size alone:** Big names are not always good fits.
* **Sales and marketing choosing separately:** The result is two lists and mixed messages.
* **Never refreshing:** Accounts change. Review the list at set intervals.

---

## Selection vs. prioritization

Selection decides which accounts are on the list. Prioritization decides the order and effort level within the list.

## Account selection FAQs

**What is account selection in ABM?**

Account selection in ABM is the step where sales and marketing decide which companies belong on the target account list. It uses fit criteria from the ideal customer profile, timing signals, potential revenue, and team capacity to narrow a large market into a focused set.

**How do you select target accounts for ABM?**

Define your ideal customer profile, list every company that matches, add fit and timing data, limit the list to what your team can work well, and agree on it with sales. Then review it regularly and swap out accounts that never engage.

**What is the difference between account selection and account prioritization?**

Account selection decides which accounts make the target list at all. Account prioritization ranks the selected accounts so the team knows where to spend the most effort first, often by dividing them into tiers.

**How many accounts should an ABM program target?**

It depends on team size and how personalized the program is. One-to-one programs may cover a handful of accounts, while one-to-many programs can cover hundreds. Choose the number your team can research and engage well.
