[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Answer engine optimization Contextual Intelligence & AI # Answer engine optimization (AEO) Also known as: AEO In short Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping your content so that answer engines, such as AI assistants and answer boxes in search, can find it, understand it, and present it as the answer to a question. The aim is to be the source quoted or recommended, not just a link in a list. AEO overlaps with SEO but focuses on question-and-answer clarity. Pages that state a direct answer first, then support it, are easier for both people and machines to use. ## How AEO works in practice ### Answer first Open each page or section with a one or two sentence direct answer to the question in the heading. Add detail after. ### Match real questions Use phrasing from sales calls, support tickets, and search suggestions. Each question should have its own clearly labeled section. ### Make structure explicit Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables for comparisons. Add FAQ markup where it fits. ### Show credibility Name the author, state dates, and keep facts current. Support claims with accurate, checkable details. --- ## AEO vs. SEO * **SEO:** Aims to rank pages for keywords so people click through. * **AEO:** Aims to have content selected as the answer, often with no click. * **Overlap:** Both reward useful, well-structured, trustworthy content, so most AEO work also helps SEO. --- ## Example Say a company sells data enrichment. Its page "What is data enrichment?" starts with a two-sentence definition, follows with a short list of data types, and ends with five FAQs written as real questions. An assistant can now lift the definition cleanly, and a reader gets the answer immediately. --- ## How to track results Check whether your brand and pages appear in assistant answers for a fixed set of questions, and watch branded search and referral traffic. This tracking is what AI search visibility describes. --- ## Common mistakes * **Keyword stuffing:** Answer engines favor clear explanations. * **Burying the answer:** A long intro before the point makes extraction harder. * **Thin pages:** Short, generic content gives nothing worth citing. --- ## Answer engine optimization FAQs **What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?** Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI assistants and search answer features can extract it and present it as a direct response to a question. It emphasizes clear answers, strong structure, and credible sources. **How is AEO different from SEO?** SEO focuses on ranking pages so people click them. AEO focuses on getting your content chosen as the answer itself, often shown without a click. The two overlap, since clear, useful, well-organized content helps with both. **How do you optimize content for answer engines?** Lead each section with a direct answer, write headings as real questions, keep paragraphs short, use lists and tables, add an FAQ section, and keep facts accurate and dated. Cover one question per section so it can be lifted cleanly. **Is AEO the same as generative engine optimization?** They are closely related and often used interchangeably. AEO usually refers to answer boxes and assistants that give direct replies, while generative engine optimization emphasizes content used in generated responses. The practical work is largely the same.
