# Attribution

Also known as: marketing attribution

In short

Attribution is the practice of deciding which touchpoints, such as ads, emails, content, events, or sales calls, deserve credit for a lead, opportunity, or closed deal. It helps teams see which activities contribute to results.

Because B2B buyers interact with many touchpoints over months, no model is perfectly accurate. Attribution gives a consistent way to compare channels, not an exact record of why someone bought.

## Common attribution approaches

* **First touch:** All credit goes to the first interaction.
* **Last touch:** All credit goes to the final interaction before conversion.
* **Multi-touch:** Credit is split across several touchpoints by a set rule.
* **Self-reported:** Buyers say how they heard about you, usually on a form.

---

## How to set it up

Track every touchpoint with consistent campaign tags.

Connect marketing data to the CRM so touchpoints link to opportunities and revenue.

Pick one model and use it consistently so trends are comparable.

Add a "how did you hear about us" field to catch what tracking misses.

---

## Example

Say a prospect reads a blog post, clicks a paid ad, attends a webinar, and then books a demo from an email. First touch credits the blog, last touch credits the email, and a multi-touch model splits credit among all four.

---

## Limits to keep in mind

Tracking misses private channels, such as word of mouth, community chats, and podcasts. Several people at one account may touch different channels. Use attribution for direction, and combine it with sales feedback and self-reported answers.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Trusting one model:** Each model favors different channels.
* **Dirty tagging:** Inconsistent campaign names break reports.
* **Stopping at leads:** Judge channels on pipeline and revenue, not only form fills.

## Attribution FAQs

**What is attribution in marketing?**

Attribution in marketing is the process of assigning credit for leads, pipeline, or revenue to the marketing touchpoints that influenced them. It helps teams compare channels and decide where to invest budget and effort.

**What are the main types of marketing attribution?**

The main types are first touch, last touch, and multi-touch models, which split credit across interactions, plus self-reported attribution, where buyers say how they found you. Each model highlights different parts of the journey.

**Why is attribution hard in B2B?**

B2B sales cycles are long and involve several buyers who interact through many channels, including ones that are not tracked, like conversations and communities. This makes any single model an approximation of what drove the deal.

**How do you choose an attribution model?**

Start with what you can track reliably and what question you need to answer. Many teams use a simple model for consistency and add self-reported data for a check. Revisit the choice as your data and sales cycle mature.
