# Audience targeting

In short

Audience targeting is the process of defining who should see a message and then reaching only those people or companies. The definition can rely on company traits, job roles, behavior, or a mix.

In B2B, an audience is usually a set of accounts plus the roles inside them. Good targeting means the right buyer sees the right message, which keeps ad spend and sales effort from leaking into poor-fit companies.

## Types of B2B audience targeting

* **Firmographic:** Industry, company size, and region.
* **Role-based:** Job title, seniority, and department.
* **Account-based:** A named list of companies, often uploaded to an ad platform or sales tool.
* **Behavioral:** Past site visits, content engagement, or research activity.
* **Lookalike:** Companies that resemble your best customers.

---

## How to build a targeted audience

### 1. Start from your ICP and personas

Use the ideal customer profile to choose companies and buyer personas to choose roles within them.

### 2. Build the list from data

Turn each trait into a filter in a data source or ad platform. Where possible, target a named account list rather than loose interest categories.

### 3. Match message to audience

Say a team targets finance leaders at logistics firms and IT leaders at the same firms. They need different copy, even though the accounts are the same.

### 4. Measure and narrow

Track cost per meeting or pipeline by audience, not just clicks. Drop audiences that generate activity but no qualified conversations.

---

## Audience targeting vs. segmentation

Segmentation divides your market into groups. Targeting is the decision of which of those groups to reach and how. You segment first, then target.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Audiences that are too wide:** Broad job-title targeting reaches many people outside your ICP.
* **Audiences that are too narrow:** A list too small for an ad platform may not deliver enough impressions to learn from.
* **Stale data:** People change roles often. Out-of-date lists waste budget and hurt deliverability.

## Audience targeting FAQs

**What does audience targeting mean in B2B marketing?**

It means defining which companies and roles should see your marketing or outreach, using traits like industry, size, job title, or behavior, and then reaching only those groups instead of a general audience.

**How do you target a B2B audience?**

Define your ideal customer profile and buyer personas, convert them into filters or a named account list, load that audience into your ad, email, or sales tools, and tailor messaging to each role. Then measure results by audience.

**What is the difference between audience targeting and segmentation?**

Segmentation splits a market into groups with shared traits. Audience targeting selects which of those groups to reach and through which channels. Segmentation is the analysis; targeting is the action taken on it.

**Is account-based targeting better than interest-based targeting?**

For B2B it is often more precise, because it reaches named companies that fit your profile instead of people who share a loose interest. Which performs better depends on list quality and match rates, so test both.
