# BANT (BANT)

In short

BANT is a lead qualification framework that scores a prospect on four criteria: budget, authority, need, and timeline. It was created at IBM and is still used to decide whether a lead is worth pursuing.

A lead that has money, a decision maker, a real problem, and a time frame is more likely to close. BANT gives reps a short checklist so they stop spending time on leads that cannot buy.

## The four BANT criteria

### Budget

Does the buyer have funds, or a way to get them? Ask how similar purchases were funded in the past instead of asking for an exact number too early.

### Authority

Who signs, and who influences the decision? Map the buying group, since the person you talk to is often not the final approver.

### Need

What problem are they trying to solve, and what happens if they do nothing? A clear, costly need is the strongest signal.

### Timeline

When must a solution be in place, and what drives that date? A launch, contract end, or budget cycle makes a timeline believable.

---

## Example questions

* **Budget:** How have you paid for tools like this before?
* **Authority:** Who else will weigh in before a decision?
* **Need:** What is this costing you today?
* **Timeline:** What needs to happen by which date?

---

## Strengths and limits

BANT is simple and easy to teach, which makes it good for early screening. Its weakness is that it is seller-centric. Modern buyers often have no fixed budget until they see value, and decisions involve committees, not one authority.

Teams often pair BANT with a framework like MEDDIC for larger deals, or soften it by treating each letter as a conversation topic rather than a pass or fail gate.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Interrogating the lead:** Asking all four in the first minute feels like a form.
* **Rejecting too fast:** A lead with need but no budget may still buy after you build a case.
* **Ignoring committees:** One contact with authority is rare in B2B.
* **Not recording answers:** Unrecorded answers cannot inform scoring or handoff.

## BANT FAQs

**What does BANT stand for in sales?**

BANT stands for budget, authority, need, and timeline. It is a qualification framework that helps sales reps decide whether a lead has the money, decision power, problem, and time frame needed to become a real opportunity.

**Who created the BANT framework?**

BANT was developed at IBM as a way to qualify leads for large sales. It became one of the most widely taught qualification methods. Many teams still use it, often in modified form, alongside newer frameworks.

**Is BANT still relevant for B2B sales?**

It is still useful as a quick screen, but it has limits. Buyers often lack a fixed budget until they see value, and decisions involve groups. Many teams use BANT early and add frameworks such as MEDDIC for complex deals.

**How do you use BANT to qualify a lead?**

Ask open questions about how the buyer funds similar purchases, who is involved in deciding, what problem is costing them, and when they need a solution. Record the answers in the CRM and use them to decide the next step.
