# Before-after-bridge (BAB)

Also known as: BAB copywriting formula

In short

Before-after-bridge (BAB) is a copywriting framework with three parts: the "before" describes the reader's current pain, the "after" shows life with the problem solved, and the "bridge" explains how to get there.

Sales teams use BAB in cold emails, landing pages, and LinkedIn messages because it is short and focused on the buyer's situation. It is a simple alternative to frameworks like PAS or AIDA.

## The three parts

### Before

Name a specific, recognizable problem. The more it matches the reader's daily reality, the more likely they keep reading.

### After

Describe the improved state in concrete terms, such as less manual work or a clearer pipeline.

### Bridge

Explain how your approach connects the two, then end with one easy next step.

---

## Cold email example

Before: "Your SDRs spend hours each week hunting for the right contacts." After: "Imagine they started each day with a ready list of relevant accounts and spent that time talking to buyers." Bridge: "Here is how a few teams built that list. Worth a short chat?" Keep each part to a sentence or two.

---

## When to use BAB

* **Clear pain point:** It works best when the problem is obvious and the benefit is easy to picture.
* **Short formats:** Cold emails, ads, and short landing page sections.
* **Change-driven offers:** When the pitch is about a better way of working.

---

## BAB vs. other frameworks

PAS (problem, agitate, solve) dwells on the pain. BAB spends more time on the outcome. AIDA walks through attention, interest, desire, and action. Pick based on whether your reader is more motivated by escaping pain or reaching a goal.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Vague problem:** "Inefficient processes" does not resonate.
* **Overpromising the after:** Claims you cannot support damage trust.
* **Weak bridge:** Explain how, not just what.

## Before-after-bridge FAQs

**What is the before-after-bridge (BAB) framework?**

Before-after-bridge is a copywriting framework in three steps: describe the reader's current problem, show the improved situation after it is solved, and present your product or approach as the bridge that gets them there.

**How do you use the BAB formula in a cold email?**

Open with one sentence on a problem the recipient likely has, follow with a sentence picturing the better result, then explain briefly how you help and ask a simple question. Keep the whole email short and specific.

**What is the difference between BAB and PAS?**

PAS (problem, agitate, solve) emphasizes the pain and its consequences before the solution. BAB spends more time on the desired outcome. PAS suits urgent, painful problems, while BAB suits changes with an appealing, visible benefit.

**When should you not use before-after-bridge copywriting?**

Avoid it when the problem is unclear, when you cannot credibly promise the outcome, or when the reader is not yet aware of any pain. In those cases, a question-led or insight-led message may work better.
