# Blended CAC

Also known as: blended customer acquisition cost

In short

Blended CAC is your total sales and marketing spend in a period divided by the total number of new customers acquired in that period, from every source. Organic and referral customers count in the denominator alongside paid ones.

It is the broadest view of acquisition cost. Its counterpart, paid CAC, divides only paid spend by only customers attributed to paid channels.

## How to calculate blended CAC

* **Formula:** Blended CAC = total sales and marketing spend / total new customers.
* **Example:** Say a team spends 300,000 on sales and marketing in a quarter and wins 60 new customers. Blended CAC is 5,000.
* **What to include:** Salaries, commissions, tools, ads, events, and agency fees tied to acquisition.

---

## Blended CAC vs. paid CAC

* **Blended:** Averages every customer, including free sources like word of mouth. It is stable and hard to game.
* **Paid:** Isolates ad and outbound efficiency, but depends on attribution, which is imperfect.
* **Use both:** Blended shows overall health. Paid shows where marginal dollars are working.

---

## How GTM teams use blended CAC

### Budget decisions

Compare blended CAC with customer lifetime value and CAC payback period to decide whether to spend more.

### Spotting dilution

If organic growth slows, blended CAC rises even when paid performance is unchanged, because fewer free customers dilute the average.

### Segment view

Split by segment or product. A blended number across self-serve and enterprise hides very different costs.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Leaving out people costs:** Counting only ad spend understates CAC badly.
* **Mismatched timing:** Spend this quarter often wins customers next quarter in long sales cycles. Lag the spend or use a rolling average.
* **Relying on blended alone:** It can look healthy while paid channels quietly become unprofitable.

## Blended CAC FAQs

**What is blended CAC?**

Blended CAC is total sales and marketing spend divided by all new customers acquired in the same period, regardless of channel. It includes organic, referral, and direct customers, so it gives an overall average cost to win a customer.

**How do you calculate blended CAC?**

Add all sales and marketing costs for a period, including salaries, tools, and ad spend, then divide by the number of new customers won. For example, 300,000 in spend and 60 new customers gives a blended CAC of 5,000.

**What is the difference between blended CAC and paid CAC?**

Blended CAC uses all spend and all new customers. Paid CAC uses only paid-channel spend and only customers attributed to those channels. Paid CAC is usually higher and shows how efficient marginal ad dollars are.

**Why can blended CAC rise when paid performance is flat?**

If organic or referral customers decline, there are fewer free wins to lower the average. Total spend divided by fewer customers raises blended CAC even though the paid channels perform exactly as before.
