Signals & Intent

# Buying intent

In short

Buying intent is the strength of a prospect's inclination to make a purchase in the near term. It is judged from signs of a defined need, a search for solutions, and movement toward a decision.

It is the same concept as buyer intent, phrased from the purchase side: buyer intent describes the person, while buying intent describes how close the purchase is. The practical question for a rep is, "How soon might this buy?"

## What raises buying intent

* **A defined problem:** The prospect can state what they need to fix.
* **A timeline:** They mention a deadline, renewal date, or budget cycle.
* **Active evaluation:** They compare vendors or request pricing.
* **More stakeholders:** New people join calls or threads.
* **Process questions:** They ask about security review, contracts, or onboarding.

---

## How to qualify buying intent in a conversation

Data can point to intent, but a conversation confirms it. Ask what triggered the search, what happens if nothing changes, who else is involved, and when they want a solution in place. Clear answers to all four suggest strong intent. Vague answers suggest early research.

---

## A simple scoring approach

Say a team gives points for timeline, budget, and an active evaluation, and fewer points for content reads. An account with a stated deadline and two stakeholders outranks one with many page views and no stated need. The weights are an example; set your own from closed deals.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Mistaking interest for intent:** A webinar attendee may only be curious.
* **Ignoring timing:** A real need next year is not a priority this quarter.
* **Skipping the conversation:** Signals alone cannot confirm budget or authority.

## Buying intent FAQs

**What is buying intent?**

Buying intent is how strongly a prospect is leaning toward a near-term purchase. It is judged from a defined need, a timeline, active vendor evaluation, and signals such as pricing research or more stakeholders joining the process.

**What is the difference between buying intent and buyer intent?**

They are used almost interchangeably. Buyer intent emphasizes the person or company and their inclination to buy. Buying intent emphasizes the purchase itself and how close it is, which is useful when judging timing and urgency.

**How do you identify buying intent in a prospect?**

Look for a defined problem, a stated deadline or budget cycle, vendor comparisons, pricing questions, and new stakeholders joining. Confirm in conversation by asking what prompted the search and when they want a solution in place.

**Can buying intent be measured?**

Partly. You can score behaviors such as pricing visits and demo requests, and add conversation details like timeline and budget. The result is an estimate, so check how well scores predicted past closed deals and adjust.
