# Call to action (CTA)

In short

A call to action (CTA) is a button, link, or line of copy that asks the audience to take a specific next step. Examples include "Book a demo," "Download the checklist," and "Reply with a time."

Every asset should have one primary CTA. It connects content to the pipeline by turning attention into an action you can measure.

## Types of CTA

* **Hard CTA:** Asks for a high-commitment step, such as booking a demo or starting a trial. Best for readers close to buying.
* **Soft CTA:** Asks for a low-commitment step, such as reading a guide or watching a short video. Best for early research.
* **Sales CTA:** A request in outbound, such as "Worth a 15-minute call next week?"

---

## How to write a CTA that works

### Lead with a verb

Use a clear action such as "Get," "See," or "Book." Avoid "Submit" or "Click here."

### State the value

"Get the pricing guide" says more than "Download."

### Match the stage

Offer a step that fits where the reader is. A first-time visitor rarely wants a sales call.

### Reduce friction

Keep forms short and say what happens after the click.

### Make it visible

Use contrast and whitespace, and place it where intent peaks, such as after proof.

---

## Example

Say a blog post compares two reporting approaches. A weak CTA at the end reads "Contact us." A stronger one reads "Get the reporting template" for readers still researching, with a secondary "Book a walkthrough" for those ready to talk. Compare the click and conversion rates of each over a few weeks to see which wins.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Too many CTAs:** Competing actions split attention and lower the rate of all of them.
* **Generic wording:** Vague labels give no reason to click.
* **Mismatch with the offer:** A CTA promising a guide that leads to a sales form breaks trust.
* **No testing:** Small copy and placement changes can shift results, so test one variable at a time.

## Call to action FAQs

**What is a call to action (CTA)?**

A call to action is a prompt, usually a button, link, or line of copy, that tells the audience which step to take next, such as booking a demo, downloading a guide, or replying to an email.

**What makes a good call to action?**

A good CTA starts with a clear verb, states the value of the click, matches the reader's buying stage, and asks for one step only. It is easy to see and does not add unnecessary form fields or surprises.

**What is the difference between a hard CTA and a soft CTA?**

A hard CTA asks for a high-commitment step such as a demo or trial, suited to buyers close to a decision. A soft CTA asks for a low-commitment step such as reading a guide, suited to early-stage researchers.

**How many CTAs should a page have?**

Aim for one primary CTA per page, repeated where intent is high. You can add a lower-commitment secondary option, but competing equal actions tend to split attention and reduce the number of people who convert.
