[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Case study Marketing # Case study In short A case study is a structured story about a real customer: the problem they had, the solution they chose, and the results they got. It works as proof, because prospects trust what peers achieved more than what a vendor claims. Case studies are used in marketing, sales conversations, and proposals. A customer testimonial is a short quote; a case study gives the context and the numbers behind it. ## What a strong case study contains * **Customer context:** Industry, size, and role of the people involved, so a prospect can see themselves in it. * **The problem:** What was broken or missing, and what it cost, in the customer’s own words. * **The decision:** Why they chose to change, what else they considered, and how they evaluated options. * **The solution in practice:** How it was rolled out, who used it, and how long it took. * **Results:** Specific outcomes with the timeframe and how they were measured. --- ## How to produce one * **Pick the right customer:** Choose customers who match your ICP and have a clear, measurable win, not only the friendliest ones. * **Get approval early:** Agree on naming, quotes, and numbers with the customer before drafting. Legal and PR sign-off can take weeks. * **Interview, then write:** A 30 to 45 minute call with open questions gives better quotes than an emailed form. * **Let the customer approve the draft:** This protects the relationship and the accuracy of every figure. --- ## How GTM teams use case studies Marketing publishes full stories and pulls quotes for landing pages and ads. Sales sends the story closest to the prospect’s industry or use case right after a discovery call, and builds a short version for the deck. Say a team has one story per target segment. A rep selling into logistics can then share the logistics story instead of a generic one. Fit matters more than volume. --- ## Common mistakes * **Vague outcomes:** "Improved efficiency" proves nothing. Use a metric with a baseline. * **Vendor-centered writing:** The customer should be the hero, not your product. * **Hard to find:** A great story buried on a page nobody visits does not help the deal. * **Stale stories:** Outdated screenshots and numbers weaken trust. Review them each year. --- ## Case study FAQs **What is a case study in B2B marketing?** A case study in B2B marketing is a detailed customer story that explains the problem a company faced, the solution it adopted, and the results it achieved. Vendors use it as evidence for prospects who are weighing the same decision. **What should a case study include?** A case study should include the customer’s background, the problem and its cost, why they chose the solution, how it was implemented, and specific measurable results with a timeframe. A direct customer quote adds credibility and makes the story easier to scan. **How long should a case study be?** Most B2B case studies are one to two pages, or roughly 500 to 1,000 words, with a short summary at the top. Keep a one-paragraph version for sales decks and a quote-sized version for web pages and ads. **What is the difference between a case study and a testimonial?** A testimonial is a short statement of praise from a customer. A case study is a longer narrative with context, the steps taken, and measurable results. Testimonials show satisfaction, while case studies show how and why the outcome happened.
