# Catch-all email

Also known as: accept-all email, catch-all domain

In short

A catch-all email is an address on a domain whose mail server accepts messages sent to any address at that domain, whether or not the mailbox exists. Because the server never rejects mail at the door, verification tools cannot confirm that a particular person receives it.

Verification tools usually label these results "catch-all" or "accept-all" rather than valid or invalid. They carry more bounce risk than verified addresses, so they need separate handling in outbound.

## Why catch-all domains exist

Companies set up catch-all rules so mail sent to a mistyped or old address still reaches someone. Others do it for simplicity or as a defense against enumeration. The side effect is that an email check returns a positive response for everything.

---

## Why they are risky for outbound

* **Hidden bounces:** The server accepts the message first, then may bounce or discard it later.
* **Silent delivery to nowhere:** The message may land in a shared inbox no one reads.
* **Reputation damage:** Sending to many unverified addresses raises bounce rate and can hurt sender reputation.

---

## How to handle catch-all addresses

### Segment them

Keep catch-all addresses in their own list or status so you can control volume and measure results separately.

### Verify through another signal

Cross-check with a second source, such as an email pattern seen at the same company or a data provider that confirmed the address through other means.

### Send in small batches

Start with a small share of the list, watch bounces, and scale only if they stay low. Say a team has 1,000 catch-all contacts: sending 100 first shows how risky the group really is.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating them as valid:** Mixing them into a verified list inflates confidence.
* **Dropping them all:** Many are real people. Excluding them entirely wastes reachable accounts.
* **Ignoring bounce rate:** Without tracking, one bad batch can affect all your sending.

## Catch-all email FAQs

**What is a catch-all email?**

A catch-all email is an address on a domain that accepts mail for any address, even ones that do not exist. Because the server never rejects messages, verification tools cannot confirm whether a specific mailbox is real.

**Is it safe to send cold email to catch-all addresses?**

It carries more risk than sending to verified addresses, because bounces may appear after the message is accepted. Many teams send to catch-all contacts in small, separate batches and stop if bounce rates rise.

**How do you verify a catch-all email address?**

Standard checks cannot confirm it. Teams use extra signals, such as a known email format at that company, a second data source that confirmed the address, or a small test send, and then monitor the bounce results.

**Why do email verification tools mark addresses as accept-all?**

Accept-all is the tool saying the domain server responded positively to any address it was tested with. The tool cannot tell whether the specific mailbox exists, so it reports an uncertain result instead of valid or invalid.
