# Challenger sale

Also known as: challenger sales model, challenger selling

In short

The Challenger Sale is a sales methodology in which the rep leads the conversation by teaching the buyer a new insight about their business, tailoring it to the buyer, and pushing for a decision. It was popularized by the book "The Challenger Sale" from CEB, now part of Gartner.

Its core idea is that the best reps do not just answer needs the buyer already states. They reframe how the buyer sees a problem, then show why the status quo has a cost.

## The three core skills

### Teach

Share a point of view the buyer has not considered, backed by evidence, that leads naturally to your solution. The insight should reveal a hidden problem or cost.

### Tailor

Adapt the message to the role, industry, and priorities of each stakeholder. A CFO and a head of operations need different versions of the same story.

### Take control

Be comfortable discussing price, set the next step, and push back respectfully when a buyer's view is wrong.

---

## How to apply it

* **Build a commercial insight:** Find a pattern your customers share that most buyers overlook.
* **Open with the insight:** Lead outreach and first calls with it rather than a product pitch.
* **Link it to your solution:** Move from the new problem to how you solve it.
* **Customize per stakeholder:** Prepare a short version for each persona.

---

## Example

Say a rep sells scheduling software to clinics. Instead of asking what tools they use, the rep shows that missed appointments cluster on a few predictable days and that manual reminders do not fix it. The clinic leader sees a problem they had not sized, and the conversation shifts from features to impact.

---

## When it works, and when it does not

It suits complex, multi-stakeholder sales where buyers are open to new ideas. It fits poorly in simple, transactional sales and with reps who lack deep customer knowledge. A weak or generic insight comes across as arrogance.

---

## Common mistakes

* Challenging without evidence.
* Using the same insight for every account.
* Confusing "challenge" with being confrontational.
* Skipping discovery because the insight feels strong.

## Challenger sale FAQs

**What is the Challenger Sale model?**

The Challenger Sale is a sales methodology in which reps teach buyers a new insight, tailor the message to each stakeholder, and take control of the sale. It focuses on changing how the buyer thinks about a problem rather than only responding to stated needs.

**Who created the Challenger Sale?**

The approach was developed by researchers at CEB, now part of Gartner, and described in the book The Challenger Sale by Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson. It was based on their analysis of sales rep profiles.

**What are the five rep profiles in the Challenger Sale?**

The research described five profiles: Hard Worker, Challenger, Relationship Builder, Lone Wolf, and Reactive Problem Solver. The authors argued the Challenger profile performed best in complex sales.

**Is the Challenger Sale good for SDRs and outbound?**

It can work in outbound when the first message carries a relevant insight about the prospect's situation. The insight must be specific and credible. A generic claim in a cold email reads as a pitch and is usually ignored.
