# CHAMP (CHAMP)

In short

CHAMP is a sales qualification framework that stands for Challenges, Authority, Money, and Prioritization. Reps use it to decide whether a prospect is worth pursuing.

CHAMP reorders the older BANT framework. It starts with the buyer's challenges instead of budget, so the first conversation is about the problem rather than the price.

## What each letter means

### Challenges

What problem is the prospect trying to solve, and what does it cost them today? No real challenge means no deal.

### Authority

Who makes or influences the decision? Identify the decision maker, the budget owner, and anyone who can block it.

### Money

Is there budget, or a path to get it? Ask how similar problems have been funded before.

### Prioritization

Where does this sit against other projects? A real problem that ranks tenth gets no action this quarter.

---

## Sample discovery questions

* **Challenges:** What is not working today, and what happens if nothing changes?
* **Authority:** Who else will be involved in choosing a solution?
* **Money:** How is a project like this normally funded?
* **Prioritization:** What else is competing for the same time and budget?

---

## CHAMP vs. BANT

BANT checks Budget, Authority, Need, and Timeline, and often opens with budget. CHAMP opens with the challenge and replaces timeline with prioritization. Teams that find BANT too gatekeeping often prefer CHAMP. Both are lighter than MEDDIC, which suits longer, larger deals.

---

## Using CHAMP in practice

Record each letter as a field in your CRM, and mark it confirmed or unknown. Use it as a checklist in the qualification call, not a script. A deal with a strong challenge but unknown authority needs a plan to reach the right person, not a disqualification.

---

## Common mistakes

* Treating the four items as a pass/fail gate rather than areas to learn about.
* Skipping prioritization, which is where many deals stall.
* Filling fields from guesses instead of buyer statements.

## CHAMP FAQs

**What does CHAMP stand for in sales?**

CHAMP stands for Challenges, Authority, Money, and Prioritization. It is a framework sales reps use to qualify a lead by checking the prospect's problem, who decides, whether funds exist, and how high the project ranks.

**What is the difference between CHAMP and BANT?**

BANT covers Budget, Authority, Need, and Timeline and often starts with budget. CHAMP starts with the buyer's challenges and replaces timeline with prioritization. CHAMP is more problem-led and tends to feel less like an interrogation.

**When should you use the CHAMP framework?**

Use CHAMP in early discovery or qualification calls, especially when you want to lead with the buyer's problem. It suits mid-market and simpler enterprise deals. Longer, multi-stakeholder deals often need a deeper framework.

**Who created the CHAMP sales framework?**

CHAMP is commonly credited to sales trainer Ron Karr, though origin stories vary across sources. It has been adopted widely as an alternative to BANT. Check your own sales training material for the exact version your team uses.
