# Channel sales

In short

Channel sales is a go-to-market model in which a company sells its product through third-party partners, such as resellers, distributors, agencies, and integrators, rather than only through its own sales reps.

It is often called indirect sales. The vendor supplies the product and support; the partner owns some or all of the customer relationship and earns a margin or commission.

## Channel sales vs. direct sales

Many companies run both: direct for large strategic accounts, channel for regions or segments they cannot cover.

* **Direct sales:** Your own reps find, pitch, and close customers. You control the message and keep full margin, but growth is limited by headcount.
* **Channel sales:** Partners sell for you. Reach grows faster, but you share margin and have less control over the buyer experience.

---

## When channel sales makes sense

* Your buyers already trust a certain type of advisor or reseller.
* You want to enter new regions without opening offices.
* The product needs local services, integration, or compliance expertise.
* Your customers are many and small, making direct selling too costly.

---

## How to set up channel sales

### Choose a model

Decide between reseller, referral, or co-sell. Referral is the lightest to start; resale needs contracts, pricing, and support processes.

### Set rules of engagement

Write down deal registration, territory, pricing floors, and who owns renewals. Ambiguity here is the most common cause of partner disputes.

### Equip and track

Provide training, battlecards, and demos. Track partner-sourced pipeline and win rates against your direct team as a benchmark.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating partners as free headcount:** They have other vendors to sell; you must earn their attention.
* **Underpricing the partner margin:** If the margin is too thin, partners will not prioritize you.
* **Poor handoffs:** Unclear support ownership frustrates customers and partners alike.

## Channel sales FAQs

**What is channel sales?**

Channel sales is a model where a company sells through third-party partners, such as resellers, distributors, and agencies, instead of or in addition to its own direct sales team. Partners earn a margin or commission on the deals they close.

**What is the difference between channel sales and direct sales?**

In direct sales, the company's own reps sell to the customer. In channel sales, partners handle some or all of the selling. Channel sales extends reach but shares margin and gives the vendor less control over the buyer experience.

**When should a company start channel sales?**

Start once the product is repeatably sold directly and has clear positioning, pricing, and support. Partners need something proven to sell. Channel sales fits best when buyers rely on advisors or when you need reach beyond your own team.

**What are the risks of channel sales?**

Main risks include channel conflict between partners and direct reps, lower margins, weaker control over messaging, and partners who do not prioritize your product. Clear deal rules, strong enablement, and fair incentives reduce these risks.
