# Chief revenue officer (CRO)

Also known as: CRO

In short

A chief revenue officer (CRO) is the senior executive accountable for a company's revenue growth across the full customer lifecycle. The role usually oversees sales, and often marketing, customer success, and revenue operations.

The CRO exists to remove the gaps between teams that each own part of the funnel. One leader owns the number, so handoffs from marketing to sales to renewal are managed as a single system.

## What a CRO does

* **Revenue strategy:** Sets targets, segments, pricing input, and go-to-market plans.
* **Forecasting:** Owns the revenue forecast and reports it to the CEO and board.
* **Team alignment:** Aligns sales, marketing, and customer success on shared goals and definitions.
* **Process and tools:** Oversees the tech stack, data, and operating cadence.
* **Hiring and coaching:** Builds leadership and sets quotas and compensation plans.

## CRO vs. VP of sales

A VP of sales leads the sales team and its quota. A CRO has a wider scope that covers the whole customer lifecycle, so the role usually sits above sales and often marketing and customer success. Titles vary by company, so check the actual reporting lines.

---

## Selling to a CRO

### What they care about

Predictable growth, forecast accuracy, pipeline coverage, retention, and efficient spend. They think in company-level outcomes, not tool features.

### How to approach

Lead with a business outcome tied to their goals, keep the message short, and support it with a relevant example. Expect them to delegate evaluation to revenue operations or sales leaders, so earn those relationships too.

---

## Example

Say a company's leads convert well but customers churn after year one. A CRO sees that marketing, sales, and customer success each hit their own targets while revenue stalls. They would then align the teams on a shared retention goal rather than push any one team harder.

---

## Common misconceptions

* A CRO is not simply a renamed head of sales.
* Not every company needs one; small teams often do not.
* A CRO does not replace revenue operations, which they rely on.

## Chief revenue officer FAQs

**What does a chief revenue officer do?**

A chief revenue officer is responsible for a company's total revenue growth. They set revenue strategy, own the forecast, and align sales, marketing, and customer success so that every stage of the customer lifecycle works toward shared goals.

**What is the difference between a CRO and a VP of sales?**

A VP of sales manages the sales team and its quota. A CRO has a broader scope covering the whole revenue engine, often including marketing, customer success, and revenue operations. The CRO usually reports to the CEO.

**When does a company need a chief revenue officer?**

A company often considers a CRO when sales, marketing, and customer success operate in silos and revenue is hard to predict. Smaller companies usually manage with a head of sales or founder until the go-to-market organization grows.

**How do you sell to a chief revenue officer?**

Focus on revenue outcomes such as forecast accuracy, pipeline growth, or retention, keep messages short, and use relevant examples. CROs usually delegate detailed evaluation, so build relationships with revenue operations and sales leaders as well.
