# Churn risk

In short

Churn risk is the likelihood that a customer will cancel, downgrade, or fail to renew. It is assessed per account so teams can act before the customer leaves.

Churn rate tells you how many customers you lost. Churn risk looks ahead and tells you which ones are likely to go next, which is when intervention can still work.

## Common churn risk signals

* **Falling usage:** Fewer logins, fewer active users, or unused features.
* **Low engagement:** Missed check-ins, unanswered emails, skipped reviews.
* **Support trouble:** Repeated tickets, unresolved issues, or negative feedback.
* **Champion change:** Your main contact leaves or changes roles.
* **Company change:** Layoffs, budget cuts, acquisition, or a switch in strategy.
* **Contract signals:** Requests to reduce seats or questions about cancellation terms.

## How to assess churn risk

### Pick a small set of signals

Start with a few signals you can measure reliably, such as usage, support volume, and stakeholder changes.

### Check against past churn

Look at customers who left and see which signals appeared in the months before. Keep signals that actually separated them from retained customers.

### Flag and rank

Combine signals into a simple rating, such as low, medium, or high, or fold them into a customer health score.

---

## What to do about it

* Contact high-risk accounts early, ideally well before renewal.
* Find the cause with a direct conversation, not an assumption.
* Offer training, a fix, or a rollout review if value is not being realized.
* Reach additional stakeholders if the champion has left.
* Record the outcome so the model improves.

---

## Example

Say an account's active users fall from many to a few over a quarter, and the admin who bought the product has left. Either signal alone is a concern. Together they justify a call from customer success and an executive check-in.

---

## Common mistakes

* Waiting until the renewal notice to look at risk.
* Relying on one metric, such as logins.
* Treating every flagged account the same.

## Churn risk FAQs

**What is churn risk?**

Churn risk is the probability that a customer will cancel, downgrade, or not renew. It is assessed account by account using signals such as usage, engagement, support history, and changes at the customer company.

**How do you measure churn risk for a customer?**

Combine a few measurable signals, such as product usage, support volume, contact changes, and payment issues, into a rating like low, medium, or high. Validate it against past customers who left to see which signals were predictive.

**What is the difference between churn risk and churn rate?**

Churn rate is a backward-looking metric showing the share of customers or revenue lost in a period. Churn risk is forward-looking and estimates which current customers are likely to leave, so teams can act before it happens.

**What are early warning signs of customer churn risk?**

Common early signs include declining product usage, fewer active users, unresolved support issues, a departing champion, missed meetings, budget cuts at the customer, and requests to reduce seats or review cancellation terms.
