[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Closing ratio RevOps & Pipeline # Closing ratio In short Closing ratio is the percentage of deals a rep or team closes out of the deals they actively worked to a decision. If you pursued 20 qualified opportunities and won 5, your closing ratio is 25%. It measures late-stage selling skill and deal quality, not top-of-funnel activity. It is closely related to win rate, but teams often define the denominator differently, so always state which deals you count. ## How to calculate closing ratio The formula is deals won divided by the deals in your chosen denominator, multiplied by 100. The hard part is choosing the denominator and sticking to it. * **Qualified opportunities::** The most common choice. It ignores leads that never became real deals. * **Proposals or demos delivered::** Gives a tighter, late-stage ratio and shows how well reps close once a buyer is engaged. * **Closed deals only::** Won divided by won plus lost. This excludes open deals, so measure it over a period where most deals have resolved. --- ## Closing ratio vs win rate and conversion rate Win rate is usually measured over all opportunities that reached a final outcome. Closing ratio often uses a narrower, later-stage denominator, such as proposals sent. Conversion rate is broader and can describe any stage-to-stage step, such as lead to meeting. --- ## A worked example Say a team of four reps delivered 80 proposals in a quarter and closed 20 of them. The team closing ratio is 25%. If one rep closed 9 of 15 (60%) and another closed 2 of 25 (8%), the gap points to a coaching or deal-qualification issue, not a market problem. --- ## How to improve it * **Qualify harder::** Remove deals with no budget, no authority, or no timeline before they reach proposal. * **Involve the buying group::** Deals with several engaged stakeholders tend to stall less than single-threaded ones. * **Review lost deals::** Record a loss reason for every lost deal and look for patterns by segment, source, and rep. --- ## Common mistakes * Comparing reps who work different segments or deal sizes as if they were equal. * Raising the ratio by cherry-picking easy deals, which lowers total revenue. * Mixing new business and renewals in one number. --- ## Closing ratio FAQs **What is a good closing ratio in B2B sales?** There is no universal good closing ratio. It depends on deal size, sales cycle, segment, and how strictly you qualify. Compare your ratio against your own history by segment and lead source, and track whether it improves while total revenue also grows. **How do you calculate closing ratio?** Divide the number of deals won by the number of deals in your chosen denominator, such as qualified opportunities or proposals delivered, then multiply by 100. For example, 5 wins from 20 opportunities gives a 25% closing ratio. **What is the difference between closing ratio and win rate?** They are similar, and many teams use them interchangeably. Win rate usually counts all opportunities that reached a final outcome, while closing ratio often uses a narrower late-stage base, such as proposals sent. Always document the denominator you use. **Why is my closing ratio dropping?** Common causes include weaker lead quality, looser qualification, more competition, longer buying groups, or a new rep mix. Break the ratio down by source, segment, deal size, and rep to find where the drop starts before changing the process.
