# Cold email

In short

A cold email is a one-to-one business message sent to a person who has not asked to hear from you and has no existing relationship with your company. Its goal is to earn a reply, start a conversation, or book a meeting.

Cold email is a common outbound tactic for SDRs, AEs, and founders. It differs from marketing email, which goes to people who opted in, and rules on consent vary by country, so check local requirements. This is not legal advice.

## Anatomy of a cold email

* **Subject line:** Short, specific, and honest about the content.
* **Opening:** A relevant reason for writing to this person, not a generic compliment.
* **Value:** One sentence on the problem you help with and for whom.
* **Call to action:** A single, low-effort ask, such as a question or a short call.

---

## A short example

"Hi Maria, saw you are hiring three account executives this quarter. Teams scaling sales often struggle to get new reps a clean target account list quickly. We help with that. Is it worth a 15-minute chat next week?"

---

## What makes cold email work

* A well-defined target audience that actually has the problem.
* A specific trigger, such as a hire, funding round, or tool change.
* Accurate, verified addresses.
* Short copy that is easy to read on a phone.
* Follow-ups that add something new instead of repeating "bumping this".

---

## Cold email vs. warm email

A warm email goes to someone who has already engaged, for example a webinar attendee or an introduction. A cold email goes to someone with no prior contact. Warm emails usually earn more replies because trust exists.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Talking about yourself:** Long product descriptions lose readers. Focus on their problem.
* **Poor targeting:** Even great copy fails with the wrong audience.
* **Ignoring deliverability:** Unverified lists and sudden high volume hurt sender reputation.
* **No opt-out:** Respect unsubscribe requests and local rules on commercial email.

## Cold email FAQs

**What is a cold email?**

A cold email is an unsolicited business message sent to someone you have no prior relationship with. Its purpose is to start a conversation, get a reply, or book a meeting. Sales teams and founders use it as a core outbound tactic.

**Is cold email legal?**

It depends on the country and the recipient. Some regions allow B2B cold email with an opt-out and accurate sender details, while others require prior consent. Check the rules where you and your recipients are based. This is not legal advice.

**How do you write a good cold email?**

Keep it short, give a specific reason for contacting that person, describe the problem you solve in one sentence, and make one easy ask. Personalize with a real trigger and avoid long product descriptions.

**What is the difference between cold email and spam?**

Spam is mass, irrelevant, or deceptive email. A good cold email is targeted, honest about who sent it, relevant to the recipient's role, and easy to opt out of. Poor targeting is what makes cold email feel like spam.

**How many follow-ups should a cold email sequence have?**

Many teams use three to five touches spread over a couple of weeks, but there is no fixed rule. Each follow-up should add something new, such as a relevant insight, and the sequence should end politely.
