# Command of the Message (CotM)

In short

Command of the Message is a sales methodology that teaches reps to articulate, in a consistent and credible way, how their solution solves a customer's specific business problems and what value results. It is often abbreviated CotM and is associated with Force Management.

Its core idea is that buyers pick the vendor who most clearly connects a problem to measurable business impact. The method gives every rep and manager a shared language for doing that.

## Core elements

Practitioners describe the approach through a handful of recurring building blocks.

* **Required capabilities:** What the buyer needs to be able to do to solve the problem, framed before you name your product.
* **Positive business outcomes:** The results the buyer wants, such as lower cost or faster delivery.
* **Metrics:** The numbers that show whether the outcome was reached.
* **Differentiation:** Why your approach delivers those capabilities better or differently than alternatives.
* **Proof points:** Customer evidence that the claim holds up.

---

## How it shows up in a deal

### Discovery

Reps ask questions to uncover the problem, its cost, and the outcome the buyer wants, instead of listing features.

### Messaging

Reps prepare short, repeatable statements that tie a customer problem to your value and proof. Managers can then coach against the same structure.

### Executive conversations

The same framing helps reps speak in business terms with senior buyers, who care about outcomes more than product detail.

---

## A quick example

Say a rep sells onboarding software. Instead of describing the dashboard, she says: "Teams like yours typically need new hires productive faster without adding trainers. When that works, ramp time drops and managers get hours back. Here is how a similar company measured it." The problem, outcome, and proof come before any product detail.

---

## Command of the Message vs. similar methods

* **Value selling:** A broad approach to selling on business value. Command of the Message is one structured way to put it into practice.
* **MEDDIC:** A qualification framework focused on whether a deal is real. It pairs well with message training, which focuses on what you say.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating it as a script:** Reps still need to listen and adapt to each buyer.
* **Skipping coaching:** The language fades unless managers reinforce it in calls and deal reviews.
* **Vague metrics:** Outcomes need numbers the buyer agrees with, not generic promises.

## Command of the Message FAQs

**What is Command of the Message in sales?**

Command of the Message is a sales methodology that trains reps to connect a buyer's business problems to the outcomes and value a solution delivers, using consistent language, differentiation, and proof points. It helps reps and managers speak about value in a shared, repeatable way.

**Who created Command of the Message?**

The methodology is associated with the sales training company Force Management, which developed and popularized it. Many B2B software and technology companies have adopted it for sales onboarding, messaging, and deal coaching.

**How is Command of the Message different from MEDDIC?**

Command of the Message focuses on how reps communicate value and differentiation to buyers. MEDDIC is a qualification framework that checks whether a deal is real, covering metrics, buyer, criteria, and process. Many teams use both together.

**Is Command of the Message only for enterprise sales?**

It is most common in complex B2B sales with multiple stakeholders and longer cycles, where value must be explained to several buyers. Its core idea of linking problems to outcomes can still help simpler sales motions.
