[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Competitive advantage GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # Competitive advantage In short A competitive advantage is a lasting strength that lets a company win customers, keep them, or earn better margins than its competitors. It has to matter to buyers and be difficult to copy. A feature is not automatically an advantage. If a rival can ship the same feature next quarter, it is a temporary lead. Advantages that last usually come from cost, differentiation, data, relationships, or scale. ## Common sources of competitive advantage * **Cost:** Delivering the same value at a lower cost, which allows lower prices or higher margin. * **Differentiation:** A product, service, or experience buyers see as clearly better for their needs. * **Focus:** Deep expertise in one niche that generalists cannot match. * **Data and network effects:** The product improves as more customers use it. * **Switching costs:** Customers find it costly or risky to leave. * **Brand and trust:** Buyers choose you first because they know you. --- ## How to test whether you have one ### Does the buyer care? Check win and loss notes. If customers never mention the strength as a reason to buy, it may not matter. ### Can a competitor copy it? Ask how long and how costly it would be for a rival to match it. The harder it is, the stronger the advantage. ### Can you prove it? Back the claim with customer results, references, and demos. An advantage that cannot be shown is only a claim. --- ## Using it in go-to-market * Put it at the center of positioning and your value proposition. * Target accounts where the advantage matters most, as defined by your ideal customer profile. * Give reps battlecards that connect the advantage to buyer problems, in plain terms. * Review it each year, since advantages erode as markets change. --- ## Common mistakes * Calling a feature list an advantage. * Claiming to be better at everything instead of choosing what to be best at. * Describing the advantage in internal language buyers do not use. --- ## Competitive advantage FAQs **What is a competitive advantage?** A competitive advantage is a strength that helps a company win and keep customers better than rivals do, and that is hard to copy. Common sources include lower cost, clear differentiation, deep focus, data, and high switching costs. **What is the difference between competitive advantage and unique selling proposition?** A competitive advantage is the underlying strength that makes you better or different. A unique selling proposition is how you communicate that strength to buyers. The advantage must exist before the message can be credible. **What are examples of competitive advantage in B2B SaaS?** Examples include proprietary data, a deep integration ecosystem, a lower cost to serve, specialist expertise in one industry, and high switching costs from embedded workflows. Each one has to matter to buyers to count. **How do you know if your competitive advantage is sustainable?** Check whether rivals could copy it quickly or cheaply. Advantages built on data, relationships, scale, or switching costs tend to last longer than those built on a single feature, which competitors can often match.
