# Connect rate

In short

Connect rate is the percentage of outbound dials that end with a live conversation, usually with the intended prospect or a gatekeeper who engages. It is calculated as connects divided by total dials.

It measures the quality of your phone data and calling timing, not rep skill. A low connect rate means reps spend their day on voicemails and wrong numbers instead of conversations.

## How to calculate connect rate

Divide the number of connected calls by the number of dials, then multiply by 100. Say a rep makes 80 dials in a block and reaches 12 people. The connect rate is 15%.

Agree on what counts as a connect before you report it. Some teams count any human pickup, others count only conversations lasting a set number of seconds. Pick one rule and keep it.

## Connect rate vs. dial rate

Dial rate measures how many calls a rep makes in a period. Connect rate measures how many of those calls reach someone. One tracks activity, the other tracks result.

---

## What drives connect rate

* **Phone data quality:** Direct dials and mobile numbers connect more often than main switchboard lines, which route to receptionists or menus.
* **Time of day:** Calling when your buyers are at their desks, in their own time zone, raises pickups.
* **List freshness:** Numbers go stale when people change jobs. Old lists produce disconnected numbers and wrong contacts.
* **Local presence and spam labels:** Numbers flagged as spam by carriers are often ignored or blocked.
* **Persona:** Executives screen calls more than practitioners do, so rates differ by segment.

---

## How to improve it

* **Segment by number type:** Report connect rate separately for direct dials, mobile, and HQ lines to see which data is worth paying for.
* **Test call windows:** Run the same list at different times for two weeks and compare.
* **Clean lists often:** Remove disconnected numbers and re-verify contacts before big call blocks.
* **Pair with email and LinkedIn:** A prior touch makes people more likely to pick up an unknown number.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Chasing volume:** More dials on bad data lowers connect rate and wastes rep time.
* **Mixing metrics:** Blending connects with meetings booked hides where the funnel breaks.
* **Ignoring segments:** A blended average hides that one region or persona may be near zero.

## Connect rate FAQs

**What is a good connect rate in cold calling?**

There is no universal number. Connect rate depends on your phone data, personas, regions, and call timing. Track your own baseline by number type and segment, then aim to improve it over time instead of comparing against a generic figure.

**How do you calculate connect rate?**

Divide the number of calls that reached a live person by the total number of outbound dials, then multiply by 100. For example, 12 connects from 80 dials is a 15% connect rate. Define what counts as a connect first.

**What is the difference between connect rate and dial rate?**

Dial rate counts how many calls a rep or team places in a period. Connect rate is the share of those calls that reach a person. Dial rate measures effort, while connect rate measures how effective that effort is.

**How can you improve your connect rate on sales calls?**

Use verified direct dials and mobile numbers, call at times your buyers are likely at their desks, refresh stale contact lists, and warm up prospects with an email or LinkedIn touch before calling. Review results by segment and number type.
