[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Consultative selling Sales # Consultative selling In short Consultative selling is a sales approach in which the rep acts as a trusted advisor. They ask questions to understand the buyer's situation and problems first, then recommend a solution only if it fits. The focus moves from pushing a product to solving a problem. Done well, it builds trust and leads to better-fit customers; done badly, it becomes endless questioning with no direction. ## How consultative selling works ### Research first Learn the account, role, and likely challenges before the call so questions are specific, not generic. ### Diagnose with questions Ask open questions about goals, current process, obstacles, and consequences of doing nothing. Listen more than you talk. ### Recommend and tailor Connect what you heard to a specific proposal. Be willing to say when your product is not a fit. ### Follow through Stay involved after the sale to confirm the promised results are being achieved. --- ## Example questions * **Situation:** How does your team handle this process today? * **Problem:** Where does it break down or slow you down? * **Impact:** What does that cost you in time, money, or missed targets? * **Outcome:** What would a good result look like in six months? --- ## Consultative vs. product-led pitching A product pitch starts with features and hopes they match a need. A consultative conversation starts with the need and picks the features that apply. It is closely related to solution selling, but the emphasis on advisory trust and the rep's expertise is stronger. --- ## When it fits best It suits higher-priced or customized products, longer cycles, and markets where buyers are unsure how to solve their problem. For simple, low-cost products with a clear need, a lighter approach may be faster. --- ## Common mistakes * **Interrogating:** Stacking questions with no insight offered back feels like a form, not a conversation. * **Not doing homework:** Asking what you could have looked up wastes credibility. * **Never recommending:** Advice has to lead somewhere, ideally a concrete next step. --- ## Consultative selling FAQs **What is consultative selling?** Consultative selling is an approach where the salesperson acts as an advisor. They ask diagnostic questions to understand the buyer's problems and goals, then recommend a solution that fits, rather than leading with a product pitch or a list of features. **What is an example of consultative selling?** A rep selling analytics software first asks how the team reports results, where the process slows down, and what that delay costs. Only after understanding the impact does the rep suggest which capabilities address the problem and why. **How is consultative selling different from solution selling?** Both start with the buyer's problem. Solution selling emphasizes matching a defined offering to a diagnosed need, while consultative selling puts more weight on the rep's advisory role, expertise, and long-term trust, often shaping the solution with the buyer. **What are the benefits of consultative selling?** It builds trust, uncovers real needs, and helps reps position offers that genuinely fit, which can reduce churn and improve customer relationships. The tradeoff is that it takes more preparation and conversation time than a straightforward product pitch.
