[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Conversion friction Marketing # Conversion friction In short Conversion friction is the sum of obstacles that reduce the share of visitors who take a desired action, such as filling a form, booking a demo, or starting a trial. Obstacles can be practical, like slow pages, or mental, like unclear value. Some friction is useful, for example a qualifying question that filters out poor fits. The aim is to remove friction that adds no value. ## Common sources of friction * **Too many form fields:** Long forms ask for effort before the buyer sees value. * **Unclear offer:** Visitors do not understand what happens after they click. * **Slow or broken pages:** Delays and mobile layout problems drive people away. * **Competing actions:** Several equal CTAs make the choice harder. * **Trust gaps:** No proof, unfamiliar brand, or vague privacy language raises doubt. * **Process delays:** Waiting days for a reply to a demo request cools interest. --- ## How to find friction ### Look at the data Find the steps with the largest drop-off in your funnel and compare devices and sources. ### Watch sessions Session recordings and heatmaps show where people hesitate or leave. ### Ask people Short on-page surveys and sales feedback reveal confusion directly. ### Complete it yourself Fill the form on a phone and note every annoying moment. --- ## How to reduce it * **Cut fields:** Ask only what you need now and enrich the rest later. * **Clarify the promise:** Say what the visitor gets and what happens next. * **Add proof near the action:** Place a short customer quote or logo by the form. * **Speed up the response:** Route demo requests to a rep quickly. * **Test one change at a time:** Measure each change against conversion rate. --- ## A balance Say a form drops two fields and gets more submissions, but the leads are less qualified. Some friction was doing useful work. Judge changes on qualified pipeline, not form fills alone. --- ## Conversion friction FAQs **What is conversion friction?** Conversion friction is anything that makes it harder, slower, or less appealing for a visitor to complete a desired action, such as a long form, an unclear offer, slow page loads, or competing calls to action. **How do you reduce conversion friction?** Shorten forms, clarify the offer and next step, speed up pages, show proof near the action, remove competing calls to action, and respond fast to requests. Test changes one at a time and measure conversion rate. **Is all conversion friction bad?** No. Some friction filters out poor fits, such as a qualifying question on a demo form. Remove friction that adds no value, but judge changes by qualified pipeline rather than just the total number of submissions. **How do you find friction in a conversion path?** Check funnel drop-off by step and device, watch session recordings and heatmaps, run short on-page surveys, collect sales feedback, and complete the process yourself on a phone to spot confusing or slow moments.
