[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Conversion rate RevOps & Pipeline # Conversion rate In short Conversion rate is the share of leads, accounts, or opportunities that take a defined next step, expressed as a percentage. You calculate it by dividing the number that progressed by the number that entered the stage, then multiplying by 100. There is no single conversion rate. A team has one for every step: visitor to lead, lead to meeting, meeting to opportunity, opportunity to closed-won. Each one answers a different question, so always state the two stages you are measuring. ## How to calculate it Pick a stage pair and a time window, then count how many records entered the first stage and how many reached the second. ### A worked example Say an SDR team books 40 meetings from 400 contacted prospects in a month. The contact-to-meeting conversion rate is 40 divided by 400, or 10 percent. If 12 of those 40 meetings become opportunities, meeting-to-opportunity is 30 percent. These numbers are illustrative only. ### Cohort vs. period view A period view divides what happened this month by what entered this month. A cohort view follows one group of leads until they convert or drop out. With a long sales cycle, the cohort view is more honest because deals created now have not had time to close. --- ## Where to measure it * **Top of funnel:** Visitor to lead, or contacted to replied. It shows whether targeting and messaging land. * **Middle of funnel:** Lead to opportunity. It shows whether qualification and handoffs work. * **Bottom of funnel:** Opportunity to closed-won. It overlaps with win rate and shows how well deals are run. --- ## How to improve it * **Fix targeting first:** A low rate often means the wrong accounts entered the funnel, not that the copy is weak. * **Find the biggest drop:** Improving a stage that loses most records usually beats polishing a stage that already performs. * **Shorten response time:** Slow follow-up on inbound leads lowers the rate between lead and meeting. * **Change one thing at a time:** Otherwise you cannot tell which change moved the number. --- ## Common mistakes * **Mixing denominators:** Comparing a rate based on leads with one based on accounts makes trends meaningless. * **Ignoring volume:** A 50 percent rate on four records is noise. * **Blended averages:** Averaging all segments and channels hides the one that works and the one that does not. * **Loose stage definitions:** If reps move records forward inconsistently, the rate reflects habits, not buyers. --- ## Conversion rate FAQs **What is a good conversion rate in B2B sales?** It depends on the stage, the segment, the channel, and deal size, so no single number applies. Compare each stage against your own history and against segments within your funnel, then work on the stage with the largest drop. **How do you calculate conversion rate in a sales funnel?** Divide the number of records that reached the next stage by the number that entered the current stage, then multiply by 100. Use the same time window and the same record type, such as leads or opportunities, for both counts. **What is the difference between conversion rate and win rate?** Win rate is one specific conversion rate: opportunities that close as won divided by opportunities that were closed or reached a decision. Conversion rate is the general term for movement between any two funnel stages. **How can you increase conversion rate without more leads?** Tighten targeting so fewer poor-fit records enter the funnel, speed up follow-up, clarify stage entry criteria, and review the stage with the largest drop-off. Small changes there often beat adding more volume at the top.
