[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Cross-selling Sales # Cross-selling In short Cross-selling is the practice of selling an existing customer additional products or services that complement what they already buy. It increases revenue per account without the cost of finding a new customer. Upselling moves a customer to a higher tier of the same product. Cross-selling adds a different but related product or module. Both fall under account expansion. ## Why teams cross-sell * **Lower acquisition cost:** Existing customers already know and trust you. * **Higher retention:** Customers using more of your products tend to be harder to replace. * **Larger accounts:** More products per account lift revenue without new logos. --- ## How to cross-sell well ### Start with the customer's goals Offer an add-on only when it addresses a need you have seen, such as a gap in their workflow or a new use case from a new team. ### Segment your base Look at which customers use product A and also buy product B. Use those patterns to find similar accounts that have not yet bought B. ### Time it right Good moments include onboarding success, a renewal conversation, a new executive, or a team expansion. Avoid pushing during open support issues. ### Make it easy Offer a trial, a bundled price, or a simple add-on process so the extra purchase is low friction. --- ## Example Say a company sells email outreach software. A customer using it for prospecting starts hiring a customer success team. The account manager suggests the company's onboarding-email module for that team, shares how another similar team used it, and offers a short pilot. The suggestion fits a real need rather than a sales quota. --- ## Who owns it Account managers and customer success usually lead cross-sell, with marketing supporting through targeted campaigns. Clear ownership matters so two reps do not approach the same customer. --- ## Common mistakes * **Pitching irrelevant products:** Poor-fit offers damage trust. * **Ignoring customer health:** Do not cross-sell to unhappy accounts. * **Overloading the buyer:** One well-chosen suggestion beats a catalog. --- ## Cross-selling FAQs **What is cross-selling?** Cross-selling is selling an existing customer additional products or services that complement what they already use. It raises revenue per account and deepens the relationship without the cost and effort of acquiring a brand-new customer. **What is the difference between cross-selling and upselling?** Cross-selling offers a different but related product or service alongside what the customer already has. Upselling offers a higher-priced version or larger tier of the same product. Both expand revenue from existing accounts, but they address different needs. **What is an example of cross-selling in B2B?** A software vendor whose customer uses its CRM add-on suggests a reporting module for the same customer's management team. The offer is a separate product that complements the original purchase and addresses a new need that came up. **When is the best time to cross-sell?** Good moments include after a successful onboarding, at renewal, when a customer adds new teams or hires a new leader, or when usage data shows a need your other product solves. Avoid doing it while the customer has open problems.
