[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Customer lifecycle GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # Customer lifecycle In short The customer lifecycle is the series of stages a customer passes through in their relationship with a business, from first learning about you to buying, using the product, renewing or expanding, and sometimes leaving. It gives marketing, sales, and customer success a shared map. Each stage has its own goals, owners, and metrics, so teams can see where customers stall instead of looking only at closed deals. ## Stages of the customer lifecycle Naming varies by company, but most B2B models include these stages. * **Awareness:** The buyer learns the problem and your brand exist. * **Consideration:** They compare options, attend demos, and involve other stakeholders. * **Purchase:** The deal is negotiated and signed. * **Onboarding and adoption:** The customer sets up the product and reaches first value. * **Retention and expansion:** The account renews, adds seats, or buys more products. * **Advocacy or churn:** Happy customers refer others; unhappy ones leave. --- ## Who owns each stage Marketing usually owns awareness, sales owns consideration and purchase, and customer success owns adoption and renewal. Problems appear at handoffs, so write down what must be true before an account moves from one team to the next. --- ## Metrics to track per stage * **Early stages:** Lead volume, conversion rate, and sales cycle length. * **Adoption:** Time to first value and product activation. * **Retention:** Renewal rate, churn rate, and net revenue retention. * **Expansion:** Upsell and cross-sell revenue per account. --- ## Example: finding a stalled stage Say a team notices that many signed accounts never invite a second user. That points to a weak onboarding stage, not a lead generation problem. Fixing it with a guided setup call or a clearer first task is cheaper than buying more leads. --- ## Common mistakes * Treating the lifecycle as ending at the sale. * Using one message for customers at every stage. * Skipping handoff criteria between teams. * Measuring stages in isolation without linking them to revenue. --- ## Lifecycle vs. customer journey The customer lifecycle describes the company view of stages and ownership. The customer journey describes the buyer experience, including touchpoints and feelings. Use the lifecycle to organize teams and the journey to design interactions. --- ## Customer lifecycle FAQs **What are the stages of the customer lifecycle?** A common B2B model has awareness, consideration, purchase, onboarding and adoption, retention and expansion, and finally advocacy or churn. Companies rename or merge stages, but each one should have a clear owner, a goal, and a metric. **What is the difference between the customer lifecycle and the customer journey?** The lifecycle is the company-side map of stages and who owns them. The journey is the buyer-side experience, including each touchpoint and decision. Teams use the lifecycle for ownership and metrics, and the journey to improve interactions. **Why is the customer lifecycle important for B2B teams?** It shows where customers drop off or stall and who is responsible at each stage. Without it, teams optimize their own metrics, such as leads or closed deals, while retention and expansion problems stay hidden after the sale. **How do you map a customer lifecycle?** List the stages from awareness to renewal, assign an owner to each, define what moves an account to the next stage, and attach one or two metrics per stage. Then review real accounts to see where they stall.
