[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Customer retention GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # Customer retention In short Customer retention is the ability to keep existing customers over a period of time. In B2B SaaS it is measured by how many customers, or how much revenue, remains after a renewal cycle. Retention drives recurring revenue growth. Each customer that stays keeps paying and can expand, which lowers the pressure to replace lost revenue with expensive new acquisition. ## How to measure customer retention For example, say a team starts a year with 200 customers and 180 remain. Logo retention is 180 / 200 = 90 percent. This is illustrative only. * **Logo retention:** The share of customers still active at the end of a period. It is the opposite of logo churn. * **Gross revenue retention:** Recurring revenue kept from existing customers, excluding expansion. * **Net revenue retention:** Revenue kept including upsell and expansion, which can exceed 100 percent. --- ## What drives retention ### Fit at the point of sale Customers who match your ideal profile and have realistic expectations stay longer. Retention starts with who you sell to. ### Fast time to value A strong onboarding experience helps customers see results early. ### Ongoing success and support Regular reviews, health monitoring, and responsive support catch problems before renewal. ### Continued product value Customers stay when the product keeps solving a problem that matters to them. --- ## Retention strategies that GTM teams use * Score customer health and trigger playbooks for at-risk accounts. * Start renewal conversations well before the contract date. * Multi-thread: build relationships with more than one contact per account. * Review churned accounts to find patterns and feed them back into targeting. --- ## Common mistakes * **Watching only the total:** Retention by segment shows where the real problem is. * **Reacting at renewal:** By then the decision is often made. * **Ignoring sales fit:** Poor-fit deals produce churn that no success team can fix. --- ## Customer retention FAQs **What is customer retention?** Customer retention is a company’s ability to keep its existing customers over a period of time. In subscription businesses it is usually measured as the share of customers or revenue that remains after a renewal cycle. **How do you calculate customer retention rate?** Divide the number of customers at the end of a period, excluding new ones gained during it, by the number at the start, then multiply by 100. For revenue, use recurring revenue retained from the starting cohort. **Why is customer retention important in SaaS?** SaaS revenue is recurring, so keeping customers protects it and allows expansion. High retention also improves customer lifetime value and reduces how much new business is needed just to replace lost revenue. **How can you improve customer retention?** Sell to customers who fit your product, speed up onboarding, monitor account health, engage multiple stakeholders, start renewals early, and study churned accounts so you can fix recurring causes.
