[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Dark funnel Signals & Intent # Dark funnel In short The dark funnel is the portion of the B2B buying journey that happens where marketing and sales cannot see or measure it. It includes conversations in private groups, recommendations from peers, podcasts, and anonymous research on third-party sites. Buyers often shortlist vendors before they ever fill out a form. By the time a lead appears in your CRM, much of the decision may already be made. ## What is in the dark funnel * **Private conversations:** Messaging groups, direct messages, and calls between peers. * **Communities:** Closed forums and Slack or Discord groups. * **Content consumption:** Podcasts, newsletters, and videos that leave no trace in your analytics. * **Anonymous research:** Review sites, search, and AI assistants where the visitor is never identified. --- ## Why it matters for GTM teams Attribution models credit the last visible touch, such as a demo form or a branded search. That can make a channel look like the source when it only captured demand created elsewhere. Teams that only fund what they can measure tend to underinvest in the channels that build awareness. --- ## How to work with it ### Ask buyers directly Add an open text field to demo forms asking how the person heard about you, and have reps ask the same question on first calls. Compare the answers with what your attribution tool says. ### Be present where buyers talk Publish useful content, join communities, and help customers share their results. You cannot track every conversation, but you can make sure a good one is available. ### Use signals as partial light Third-party intent data, website visitor identification, and job change alerts can reveal some activity that would otherwise be invisible. They show part of the picture, not all of it. --- ## Common mistakes * **Trying to track everything:** Some of it cannot and should not be tracked. * **Cutting untracked channels:** Removing spend because it lacks last-touch credit can shrink future demand. * **Ignoring self-reported data:** Free-text answers are imperfect, but they often reveal channels no tool reports. --- ## Dark funnel FAQs **What is the dark funnel in B2B marketing?** The dark funnel is the part of the buyer journey that cannot be tracked, such as private chats, peer recommendations, podcasts, and anonymous research. Buyers often form a shortlist there before visiting a vendor website. **How do you measure the dark funnel?** You cannot measure it fully. Teams combine self-reported attribution on forms and sales calls, brand search trends, direct traffic, and partial signals such as intent data to build a directional view of what drives demand. **Why is the dark funnel a problem for attribution?** Standard attribution credits the last trackable touch, such as a form fill. This hides earlier influences like peer advice or content, so the last touch looks more important than it was and upstream channels look weaker. **What is the difference between the dark funnel and dark social?** The dark funnel is the whole untracked buying journey. Dark social is one part of it: sharing that happens through private channels such as messaging apps and email, where the source of a visit is lost.
