[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Data vendor Data & Enrichment # Data vendor Also known as: data vendors In short A data vendor is a company that sells or licenses data, or data-related services, to other businesses. In B2B sales and marketing, vendors supply contact lists, company databases, enrichment, intent signals, and verification. The term describes the buying relationship: contracts, pricing, support, and risk. A data provider is the party that produces the data; a vendor may be a provider or a reseller of someone else's data, so it is worth knowing which. ## Types of data vendors * **Database vendors:** Sell access to searchable company and contact databases. * **Enrichment vendors:** Fill missing fields on records you already have. * **Verification vendors:** Check whether emails and phone numbers are valid. * **Intent and signal vendors:** Supply data on research activity or company events. * **Resellers and aggregators:** Combine data from several sources into one product. --- ## What to review in a vendor contract ### Usage rights Check who may use the data, in which tools, and for which purposes. Some licenses restrict resale, sharing with agencies, or use after the contract ends. ### Retention and deletion Find out whether you must delete exported data when you cancel, and how that works in practice. ### Credits, limits, and overages Understand how lookups, exports, and API calls are metered, and what happens when you hit a limit. ### Compliance and sourcing Ask how the data was collected and how opt-outs are handled. Your legal team should review this. It is not legal advice. --- ## How to manage vendors well Keep a simple register of every data vendor with its owner, renewal date, cost, and the fields it supplies. Review each one before renewal against results, such as email deliverability from its data or the share of its fields you actually use. Overlap is common: teams often pay two vendors for the same email field. --- ## Common mistakes * Auto-renewing without checking performance. * Signing multi-year terms before a pilot on your own data. * Not knowing which vendor is the original source of the data. * Letting individual teams buy data without a central review. --- ## Data vendor FAQs **What is a data vendor?** A data vendor is a company that sells or licenses data or data services, such as contact databases, enrichment, email verification, or intent signals. The term focuses on the commercial relationship, including contracts, pricing, support, and the terms of data use. **How do I evaluate a B2B data vendor?** Run a pilot on a sample of your own records, then compare accuracy, match rate, and coverage in your target market. Review the license terms, retention rules, pricing and credit limits, security documentation, and how the vendor sources and updates its data. **Is a data vendor the same as a data provider?** Not always. A provider produces or compiles the data. A vendor is anyone selling it to you, which can be a provider, a reseller, or a platform bundling third-party data. Asking who the original source is helps you judge quality and compliance. **What should be in a data vendor contract?** Look for usage rights, allowed tools and users, data retention and deletion duties, metering of credits and API calls, uptime and support terms, security and compliance commitments, and what happens to exported data after the contract ends.
