[GTM glossary](/glossary.md) Deanonymization

Signals & Intent

# Deanonymization

In short

Deanonymization is the process of turning anonymous activity, such as a website visit, into an identified company or person. It works by matching signals like IP addresses, cookies, or hashed emails against data sets that link them to organizations or individuals.

In B2B, most of it is company-level: a visit is matched to an organization, not a named individual. Person-level identification is possible in some cases but is more limited and more regulated.

## How it works

### Company-level

An IP address is matched to the organization that uses it. This works best for visitors on a corporate network and less well for remote workers, mobile users, or people on a VPN.

### Person-level

Identification may rely on a known email click, a form fill, or an identity graph. It depends on consent rules and on how much the visitor has already shared.

---

## How GTM teams use it

* **Prioritize outreach:** Alert reps when a target account visits a pricing or comparison page.
* **Retarget ads:** Show relevant ads to identified accounts.
* **Score accounts:** Add visit frequency and page type to account scoring.

---

## Limits and privacy

Matches are probabilistic. A shared office, an ISP address, or a cloud provider can give a wrong or empty result. Treat identified visits as a hint to check, not proof of intent.

Privacy law, including GDPR and similar rules, can restrict identifying individuals or setting cookies without consent. Rules differ by region and use. This is general information, not legal advice; check with your counsel before collecting data.

---

## Example

Say an anonymous visitor reads your pricing page twice in one week. A company-level match shows the visits come from a target account. A rep checks the account, finds the right role, and sends a relevant note without claiming to know who visited.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Over-claiming:** Telling a prospect you saw them on your site can feel invasive and may be wrong.
* **Ignoring match quality:** Low-confidence matches create false leads.
* **Skipping consent review:** Set up the data flow with legal input first.

## Deanonymization FAQs

**What is deanonymization in B2B marketing?**

Deanonymization is identifying the company or person behind anonymous activity such as a website visit. It matches signals like IP addresses or hashed emails against data sets that link them to organizations or individuals.

**How accurate is website visitor deanonymization?**

Accuracy varies. Company-level matches work best for visitors on corporate networks and worse for remote workers, mobile devices, and VPN users. Treat matches as probable hints and verify them before acting on them.

**Is deanonymization legal?**

It depends on the region, the data used, and whether consent is required. Rules such as GDPR can limit identifying individuals. This is general information and not legal advice, so consult a qualified lawyer for your situation.

**What is the difference between deanonymization and reverse IP lookup?**

Reverse IP lookup is one technique that maps an IP address to a company. Deanonymization is the broader goal and can also use other methods, such as email matching or identity graphs, to identify a person.
