# Demo script

In short

A demo script is a planned outline for a product demonstration. It sets the order of topics, the questions to ask, and the features to show, so the session stays tied to the buyer's needs rather than turning into a feature tour.

The best demo scripts are built around the prospect's problems from discovery. They leave room to adapt, because the real script is the conversation.

## What a demo script includes

### Opening and agenda

Confirm the time, who is attending, and what they want to get from the session. Recap the problems you heard in discovery.

### Story-based flow

Show the product in the order of the buyer's workflow or priorities, not in menu order. Each step answers "so what does this do for me?"

### Check-ins

Pause for questions and ask whether what you showed matches how they work today.

### Next steps

End with a specific action, such as a trial, a technical session with IT, or a follow-up with the budget holder.

---

## A simple structure

* **Recap:** Two minutes on their goals and pain points.
* **Show the top three:** Demonstrate only the capabilities tied to their top priorities.
* **Prove it:** Add a short customer example or result where you have one.
* **Confirm fit:** Ask what is missing or unclear.
* **Agree the next step:** Put a date on it.

---

## Example

Say a prospect told you reporting takes two days each month. Rather than walk through every dashboard, the script opens with that problem, shows the one report flow that removes it, and asks the prospect to react. Then it moves on to the second priority.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Feature dumping:** Showing everything dilutes the points that matter.
* **Skipping discovery:** A demo without discovery guesses at priorities.
* **Talking more than asking:** Aim for a two-way session.
* **Not preparing the environment:** Use realistic sample data and test it beforehand.

## Demo script FAQs

**What is a demo script?**

A demo script is a planned outline for a product demonstration that sets the order of topics, the questions to ask, and the features to show. It keeps the session tied to the buyer's stated problems instead of becoming a general tour of the product.

**How long should a demo script run?**

Most demos work best when focused on the prospect's top priorities rather than every feature. Plan the session around a handful of key use cases, leave time for questions, and agree on the length with the prospect beforehand.

**What should a demo script cover before a product demo?**

Review your discovery notes, confirm who is attending and their goals, choose the features tied to their problems, prepare realistic sample data, and test the environment. Decide the next step you will ask for at the end of the session.

**Should a demo script be followed exactly?**

No. Treat it as a flexible outline. Follow the prospect's questions and reactions, and be ready to skip or reorder sections. A rigid, word-for-word demo ignores what the buyer actually cares about and tends to feel generic.
