# Direct dials

Also known as: direct dial numbers

In short

A direct dial is a phone number that reaches one specific person without going through a company switchboard, receptionist, or extension menu. In B2B sales data it usually means a desk line or a work mobile tied to a named contact.

Direct dials matter because cold calling success depends on reaching the buyer, not the front desk. They are also among the hardest contact fields to source and keep current, since people change roles and numbers often.

## Direct dial vs. main line vs. mobile

The three number types behave very differently in an outbound workflow. Knowing which one you have helps you decide how and when to call.

* **Main line:** The company switchboard. Reaches a receptionist or a menu, and often a dead end for cold calls.
* **Direct dial:** A number routed to one person, often a desk line or a forwarded number.
* **Mobile number:** A cell phone, sometimes work-issued and sometimes personal. Rules on calling mobiles differ by country.

## How GTM teams use direct dials

Direct dials are used by SDRs for cold calls, by AEs to reach stakeholders in an open deal, and in multichannel sequences where a call follows an email or LinkedIn touch.

Say a rep has a list of 100 target contacts. If only the main line is known, most calls end at a receptionist. With direct dials for even a portion of the list, reps spend more of their call block in real conversations.

---

## How to source direct dials

* **Data providers:** Buy or license contact data that includes phone fields, and check how the numbers were collected.
* **Enrichment:** Append phone numbers to contacts already in your CRM, with a rule for which source wins when two disagree.
* **Your own team:** Reps often capture numbers from calls, signatures, and meetings. Make sure they log them back to the CRM.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Skipping compliance:** Calling rules vary by country and by number type. Check local regulations and your internal policy. This is general information, not legal advice.
* **Treating all numbers as equal:** A stale or wrong number wastes calls. Track connect rates per source.
* **No suppression:** Always check numbers against your do not contact list before dialing.

## Direct dials FAQs

**What is a direct dial in sales?**

A direct dial is a phone number that rings one specific person, usually at a desk or on a work mobile, instead of a company switchboard. Sales teams prefer them for cold calling because they skip receptionists and menus.

**How do you find direct dials for prospects?**

Common routes are licensed contact databases, enrichment tools that append phone numbers to CRM records, and numbers your reps capture from calls and email signatures. Verify any source by tracking how many calls actually connect to the right person.

**Are direct dials legal to call for B2B outreach?**

It depends on the country, the type of number, and whether the person has opted out. Many regions have specific rules for calling mobiles or numbers on do not call registers. Check local rules with legal counsel; this is not legal advice.

**What is the difference between a direct dial and a mobile number?**

A direct dial routes to one person and is often a desk line, while a mobile number is a cell phone. A direct dial can forward to a mobile. Mobile numbers can carry stricter calling and consent rules in some countries.
