[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Double opt-in Data & Enrichment # Double opt-in In short Double opt-in is a two-step consent process. First a person signs up with their email address, then they confirm that choice by clicking a link in a follow-up email. Only after the second step are they added to your list. It differs from single opt-in, where the signup alone is enough. It is closely related to confirmed opt-in (COI); double opt-in emphasizes the two actions the person takes, while COI emphasizes the confirmed result. ## Single vs. double opt-in * **Single opt-in:** The form submission adds the person immediately. It is faster and grows the list more quickly, but it lets in typos, bots, and people who did not mean to sign up. * **Double opt-in:** The person must also confirm by email. The list is smaller but verified. --- ## When double opt-in makes sense ### Newsletters and content lists Where the main value is recurring email, a verified list protects sender reputation and engagement. ### Regions that expect verified consent Some markets treat verified consent as the norm. If you market to them, double opt-in makes your consent record easier to defend. This is general information, not legal advice. ### When to skip it For a demo request or contact form, the person already asked to talk to you. Adding a confirmation step can lose real pipeline, so single opt-in with a sales reply is usually enough. --- ## Implementation checklist * Send the confirmation email within seconds of signup. * Make the confirmation button obvious and the copy short. * Show a thank-you page that tells people to check their inbox. * Record the timestamp, form, and consent wording in the CRM. * Keep unconfirmed contacts out of campaigns, and clear them out after a set period. * Use a recognizable sending domain so the confirmation does not land in spam. --- ## Example Say a marketer runs a monthly newsletter and switches from single to double opt-in. The sign-up count drops, but bounces fall and open rates rise because the remaining addresses are real. Reporting shifts from list size to confirmed subscribers. --- ## Common mistakes * Burying the confirmation email in a generic template. * Using double opt-in on high-intent forms and losing leads. * Not storing proof of the confirmation. * Mailing unconfirmed contacts anyway, which defeats the point. --- ## Double opt-in FAQs **What is double opt-in?** Double opt-in is a two-step consent process. A person signs up with their email address, then clicks a confirmation link sent to that address. Only after confirming are they added to the mailing list, which verifies the address and the interest. **What is the difference between single and double opt-in?** Single opt-in adds a person as soon as they submit the form. Double opt-in adds a second step where they confirm by email. Single is faster and larger; double gives a smaller, cleaner, verified list. **Is double opt-in better for email deliverability?** Often yes, because it filters out typos, fake addresses, and spam traps and leaves engaged recipients. Fewer bounces and complaints help protect sender reputation, though the list grows more slowly. Results vary by audience and sending practices. **Should B2B teams use double opt-in?** It suits newsletters and content subscriptions, especially in regions that expect verified consent. For demo or contact requests, it is usually unnecessary because the person already asked to hear from you. This is general information, not legal advice.
