# Economic buyer

In short

An economic buyer is the individual who controls the budget for a purchase and has the authority to approve or reject it. In a B2B deal they weigh cost against business value rather than evaluating features.

The term comes from the MEDDIC family of qualification methods. It differs from a decision maker, who may choose a solution but still need funding approved, and from a champion, who advocates for you internally.

## Why the economic buyer matters

Deals without access to the economic buyer often stall late. A champion may love the product, but if the budget holder was never convinced, the deal can be delayed, cut, or lost to "no decision".

---

## How to identify the economic buyer

* **Ask directly:** "Who signs off on spend like this?" is a normal question.
* **Follow the budget:** Ask which team’s budget would pay for it and who owns that budget.
* **Check the org chart:** In smaller companies it may be a founder or head of department. In larger ones it is often a VP or CFO, depending on deal size.
* **Watch for approval thresholds:** Ask what happens if a purchase exceeds a certain amount.

---

## How to engage them

### Speak in business outcomes

Lead with revenue, cost, risk, or time saved. Skip detailed feature walk-throughs.

### Use your champion

Ask the champion to introduce you, and prepare them with what the buyer cares about. Agree what to say before the meeting.

### Keep it short

Bring a one-page business case with the problem, expected impact, cost, and timeline.

---

## Example

Say a sales manager loves a tool and says it needs "a quick sign-off". The AE asks who owns the budget and learns it sits with the VP of Revenue. The AE and the manager then build a short case together using the manager’s own numbers and request a 20-minute meeting with the VP.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Assuming title equals authority:** The most senior person is not always the budget owner.
* **Going around the champion:** Skipping them damages trust. Involve them instead.
* **Waiting until the proposal:** Meet the buyer earlier so surprises surface while you can still respond.

## Economic buyer FAQs

**What is an economic buyer in B2B sales?**

An economic buyer is the person who holds final authority over the budget for a purchase and can approve or reject spending. They focus on return on investment and business risk rather than product details, and they can overrule other stakeholders.

**What is the difference between an economic buyer and a decision maker?**

The economic buyer controls and approves the budget. A decision maker chooses the solution but may need budget approval from someone else. In small companies one person plays both roles, while larger deals often split them.

**How do you find the economic buyer in a deal?**

Ask your contacts who approves spending of this size, which budget would fund it, and what the approval process looks like. Cross-check with the org chart and the buyer’s role, since authority varies by company size and deal value.

**Why do deals stall without access to the economic buyer?**

Without their involvement, you rely on others to sell internally, and nobody has confirmed that budget exists. The budget holder may raise new objections, lower the priority, or delay late in the process, often ending in no decision.
