# First-touch attribution

In short

First-touch attribution is a marketing attribution model that gives all of the credit for a lead, opportunity, or deal to the very first recorded interaction with your company. If a buyer first arrived through a blog post, the blog post gets 100% of the credit.

The model is simple and shows which channels bring new people in. Its weakness is that it ignores everything after that first interaction, which can matter a lot in long B2B sales cycles.

## How first-touch attribution works

A tool records the first known touchpoint for a contact or account, such as a search visit, an ad click, or an event scan. When that contact becomes a lead or the account closes, the revenue is credited to that first source.

---

## Example

Say a contact first visits through a LinkedIn ad, later reads three blog posts, attends a webinar, and then books a demo after an SDR email. The deal closes for 40,000. First-touch attribution assigns all 40,000 to LinkedIn ads. A last-touch model would credit the SDR email, and a multi-touch model would split the credit.

---

## When first-touch is useful

* **Judging top of funnel:** It shows which channels introduce new people to you.
* **Short sales cycles:** Fewer touches means less credit is lost.
* **Small teams:** It is easy to set up and explain.

---

## Limits of first-touch attribution

* **Ignores the middle:** Content, events, and sales effort after the first visit get no credit.
* **Anonymous gaps:** The first touch is often untracked, since people research before they identify themselves.
* **Buying committees:** Several people may touch you first, but the model usually credits one contact.
* **Channel bias:** It can lead teams to overfund discovery channels and starve nurturing.

---

## How to use it well

Treat first-touch as one view, not the verdict. Compare it with last-touch and multi-touch reports to see how channels differ in introducing versus closing. Add a self-reported "how did you hear about us?" field to catch first touches that tools miss, such as podcasts or word of mouth. Report at the account level when possible.

## First-touch attribution FAQs

**What is first-touch attribution?**

First-touch attribution is a marketing attribution model that gives 100% of the credit for a lead, opportunity, or deal to the first recorded interaction a buyer had with your company, such as a search visit, ad click, or event, ignoring later touchpoints.

**How does first-touch attribution differ from last-touch attribution?**

First-touch attribution credits the first interaction a buyer had with your brand, while last-touch credits the final interaction before conversion. First-touch shows what introduces buyers to you, and last-touch shows what closes them. Neither shows the full journey.

**What are the disadvantages of first-touch attribution?**

It ignores every interaction after the first, so content, events, and sales effort in the middle get no credit. It also misses untracked first touches, handles buying committees poorly, and can push teams to overinvest in discovery channels.

**When should you use first-touch attribution?**

Use it to evaluate which channels bring new people and accounts into your funnel, especially with short sales cycles or a small team that needs a simple model. Pair it with last-touch or multi-touch views and self-reported attribution for a fuller picture.
