# Forecast accuracy

In short

Forecast accuracy is the degree to which forecasted revenue matches what the team actually closes. It is usually expressed as a percentage difference between forecast and actual for a given period.

It matters because hiring, spend, and cash decisions rely on the forecast. Persistent misses in either direction, over or under, mean the process behind the number needs work.

## How to measure it

### The basic calculation

Compare the forecast submitted at a fixed point in the period with the actual closed amount, then divide the gap by the actual. Say a team forecast 1.0 million and closed 0.9 million. The forecast was about 11 percent too high. These figures are illustrative.

### Measure at consistent points

Always take the forecast at the same time, such as the start of the quarter and again at mid-quarter, so you can compare periods fairly.

### Track bias, not just error

A team that is always high or always low has a bias to fix. A team with random misses has a data-quality problem.

## Why forecasts miss

* **Stale close dates:** Deals sit in the forecast long after the buyer has stopped responding.
* **Loose stage definitions:** Deals classified without buyer evidence.
* **Optimism or sandbagging:** Reps overstate or hold back deals.
* **Thin pipeline coverage:** Too few opportunities to absorb normal losses.
* **Unreviewed assumptions:** Stage probabilities that no longer match results.

---

## How to improve it

* **Enforce stage criteria:** Tie each stage to observable buyer actions.
* **Review close dates weekly:** Push or close deals that have gone quiet.
* **Compare forecast to actual by rep and segment:** Patterns show who needs coaching.
* **Use more than one method:** Cross-check rep calls against weighted pipeline and historical conversion.
* **Keep the data clean:** CRM errors flow directly into the forecast.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Judging one quarter:** A single result can be luck.
* **Changing the method every period:** You lose any trend.
* **Punishing misses:** Reps then hide risk, making forecasts worse.
* **Chasing a perfect number:** Aim for a useful, stable range.

## Forecast accuracy FAQs

**What is forecast accuracy in sales?**

Forecast accuracy is how closely forecasted revenue matches actual closed revenue for a period. It is typically shown as a percentage gap between forecast and actual, and it indicates how much you can rely on your pipeline for planning.

**How do you calculate sales forecast accuracy?**

Take the forecast submitted at a fixed point in the period, subtract the actual closed amount, and divide the difference by the actual. Express it as a percentage, and track whether misses lean high or low over several periods.

**What is a good sales forecast accuracy?**

There is no universal target. Compare against your own past periods and aim for steadier, smaller misses with no consistent bias. Companies with short cycles and high volume can usually forecast more tightly than those with a few large deals.

**How can you improve forecast accuracy?**

Define deal stages with buyer-based criteria, keep close dates current, clean the CRM, review pipeline coverage, and compare forecasts to actuals by rep and segment. Cross-checking several forecasting methods also reduces reliance on one opinion.
