# Funnel metrics

In short

Funnel metrics are the numbers that describe how leads, accounts, and deals move through each stage of the buying journey. They include volumes at each stage, conversion rates between stages, and the time spent in each.

Taken together they show where a go-to-market motion is healthy and where it leaks. A single top-line number such as pipeline created hides that; stage-by-stage metrics point to the specific step that needs work.

## Core funnel metrics

* **Stage volume:** How many leads, accounts, or opportunities enter each stage in a period.
* **Stage conversion rate:** The share that moves from one stage to the next, such as lead to meeting or opportunity to closed won.
* **Velocity:** How long records stay in each stage before moving on or dropping out.
* **Win rate:** Closed won deals divided by all closed deals.
* **Average deal size:** Revenue per won deal, useful for converting volume into pipeline value.

---

## How to read them

Always compare a metric against its own history and against the stage before it. A drop in meetings booked could be a lead quality problem, a follow-up speed problem, or a seasonal dip.

### Example

Say a team gets 1,000 leads, books 100 meetings, and creates 40 opportunities. Lead to meeting is 10 percent and meeting to opportunity is 40 percent. If meetings fall but the second rate holds, the fix is upstream, in targeting or outreach.

### Cohorts matter

Measure by cohort, meaning records that entered in the same period. Otherwise slow deals make this month look worse than it is.

---

## Setting them up

* **Define stages once:** Agree on written entry and exit criteria for every stage, shared by marketing and sales.
* **Use stage timestamps:** Capture the date a record enters each stage so conversion and velocity can be calculated.
* **Split by segment:** Break results out by source, segment, and region. Averages hide the pockets that work.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Vanity metrics:** Raw lead counts say little without downstream conversion.
* **Inconsistent definitions:** If marketing and sales define a qualified lead differently, the funnel never reconciles.
* **Optimizing one stage:** Pushing volume at the top can lower conversion lower down. Watch the whole chain.

## Funnel metrics FAQs

**What are funnel metrics?**

Funnel metrics are the volumes, conversion rates, and stage durations that describe how leads, accounts, and deals move through each stage of the buying journey, from first touch to closed won.

**Which funnel metrics should a B2B team track?**

Start with stage volume, stage-to-stage conversion rate, time in stage, win rate, and average deal size. Break each one out by source and segment so you can see which channels and audiences actually produce revenue.

**How do you calculate funnel conversion rate?**

Divide the number of records that reached the next stage by the number that entered the current stage, for the same cohort. For example, 40 opportunities from 100 meetings is a 40 percent meeting-to-opportunity rate.

**Why do funnel metrics matter for revenue teams?**

They show which stage is leaking, so teams fix the actual bottleneck instead of adding volume everywhere. They also let you work backward from a revenue target to the leads and meetings needed to reach it.
