[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Gap selling Sales # Gap selling In short Gap selling is a sales methodology built around one idea: buyers purchase to close the distance between where they are today and where they need to be. The seller’s job is to diagnose that gap, size it, and show that the product closes it. It was popularized by Keenan in his book of the same name. It differs from feature-led pitching because the conversation centers on the buyer’s problems, their causes, and their business impact, not on the product. ## The core parts of a gap ### Current state What is happening now: the process, tools, people, and results. Reps ask neutral, factual questions until they can describe the situation without guessing. ### Future state Where the buyer wants to be and why. A future state tied to a goal the buyer already owns, such as a revenue target, is more credible than one the rep invents. ### The gap and its impact The difference between the two, expressed in business terms: lost revenue, wasted hours, risk, or missed targets. If the gap has no cost, there is little reason to act. --- ## How to run a gap selling conversation * **Ask about problems first:** Find the visible symptoms, then dig for root causes. A symptom such as slow pipeline growth may trace back to poor targeting data. * **Quantify the impact:** Put a number on the cost with the buyer, using their figures. Say a team loses ten rep hours a week to manual research; the buyer can multiply that by headcount and salary. * **Link to personal impact:** Connect the business problem to what it means for the person you are talking to: their goals, their risk, their reputation. * **Present the solution last:** Show only the parts of the product that close the gap you uncovered. --- ## Example A rep selling forecasting software learns that a team misses its quarterly forecast by a wide margin, that managers rebuild spreadsheets by hand, and that the VP is under board pressure. The gap is forecast accuracy and manager time. The demo shows only those two things. --- ## Common mistakes * **Skipping the root cause:** Treating the first stated problem as the real one leads to weak business cases. * **Inventing the numbers:** Impact figures the buyer did not help build are easy to dismiss. * **Interrogating:** Questions need a clear purpose the buyer understands, or discovery feels like an audit. --- ## Gap selling FAQs **What is gap selling?** Gap selling is a sales methodology that focuses on the difference between a buyer’s current situation and their desired future state. The rep diagnoses the problems behind that gap, quantifies their impact, and positions the product as the way to close it. **How is gap selling different from solution selling?** Solution selling starts from the buyer’s stated problem and matches a product to it. Gap selling digs further into current state, root causes, and measurable business and personal impact before presenting anything, so the case for change is stronger. **What questions do you ask in gap selling?** Ask about the current process and results, the goal the buyer wants to reach, what causes the shortfall, what it costs in money or time, and what happens if nothing changes. Keep questions factual and tied to the buyer’s own numbers. **Does gap selling work for short sales cycles?** It can, in a lighter form. Even in a short cycle, a few questions about current state, desired outcome, and cost of the problem help a buyer justify the purchase. Complex deals with several stakeholders benefit most from the full approach.
