# Gated content

In short

Gated content is marketing material that sits behind a form. A visitor hands over details such as name, work email, and company in exchange for access to a guide, report, template, or recording.

Teams use it to capture leads and learn who is interested in a topic. The tradeoff is reach: every form field lowers the number of people who will read the asset, so the content has to be worth the exchange.

## When gating makes sense

* **High-value, specific assets:** Original research, benchmarks you collected yourself, templates, and tools that solve a concrete task.
* **Bottom-of-funnel intent:** Buyer guides and ROI calculators attract people already evaluating options.
* **Clear follow-up path:** Gate only if someone will act on the lead within days.

---

## When to leave content open

Blog posts, thought leadership, and top-of-funnel education are better ungated. Open content earns search traffic, links, and trust, and it still lets you retarget readers through ads and analytics.

---

## How to design a gate that converts

### Ask for less

Start with email and company. Fill the rest through enrichment or progressive profiling on later visits.

### Show the value first

Give a preview: a table of contents, a sample page, or key takeaways, so the visitor knows what the form unlocks.

### Set up routing

Decide before launch who follows up, how fast, and with what message. A lead from a template download should not get the same email as one from a pricing guide.

---

## Example

Say a team publishes a 20-page annual research report. It gates the full PDF, publishes the three main findings as an open blog post, and links from the post to the gate. The post earns search traffic, and the gate captures the readers who want the detail.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Gating everything:** Walls on every asset suppress traffic and push readers to competitors.
* **Long forms:** Ten fields for a checklist drives people away or invites fake data.
* **Treating every download as a sales lead:** A content download shows interest in a topic, not a buying intent. Score and nurture first.

## Gated content FAQs

**What is gated content?**

Gated content is marketing material, such as a report, guide, or template, that visitors can only access after filling out a form with their contact details. It is mainly used to capture leads for follow-up.

**What is an example of gated content?**

A common example is a research report or buyer guide offered as a PDF download. The visitor enters a work email and company name, then receives the file. Webinar recordings, templates, and calculators are also often gated.

**Should B2B content be gated or ungated?**

It depends on the asset. Original research, tools, and late-stage buying guides can be gated. Educational and thought leadership content usually works better open, because it earns search traffic, links, and trust.

**How many form fields should gated content have?**

Fewer is generally better. Many teams ask only for work email and company, then fill in the rest with enrichment or progressive profiling. Add fields only if sales or routing genuinely needs the answer.
