[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Grounding Contextual Intelligence & AI # Grounding In short Grounding is the practice of tying an AI model's output to specific, verifiable sources of information, such as your CRM, a company database, or approved documents, instead of letting it answer from its general training alone. A language model predicts plausible text, which can be wrong or outdated. Grounding supplies the facts at answer time and often requires the model to point to them. It is a main defense against AI hallucination in sales and research workflows. ## How grounding is done * **Retrieval:** Fetch relevant records or passages and include them in the prompt. See retrieval-augmented generation. * **Tool and API calls:** Let the model query live systems for facts such as firmographics or deal status. * **Constraints:** Instruct the model to answer only from supplied sources and to say when information is missing. * **Citations:** Return links or record IDs so users can verify each claim. --- ## Why it matters for GTM AI-written outreach that invents a funding round or misstates a customer's product damages credibility. Grounded research notes and emails use facts that came from a known source and date. --- ## Example Say an AI assistant drafts a first email. Ungrounded, it guesses the prospect's tech stack from the industry. Grounded, it reads the account record, finds a recorded CRM tool and a recent hire, and cites both, so the rep can check them in seconds. --- ## Checklist for grounded workflows * **Source quality:** Ground in data you trust, with update dates. * **Scope:** Give the model only what it needs for the task. * **Fallback:** Define what happens when no source answers the question. * **Review:** Sample outputs and compare claims with sources. --- ## Common mistakes * **Assuming grounding removes all errors:** Models can still misread or misquote sources. * **Stale sources:** Grounding in old data produces confident outdated answers. * **No attribution:** Without citations, nobody can verify the output. --- ## Grounding FAQs **What is grounding in AI?** Grounding is tying a model's answers to specific, verifiable sources, such as company databases or approved documents, supplied at answer time. It reduces invented or outdated claims by giving the model facts to work from. **How does grounding reduce AI hallucinations?** By providing relevant, current source material and instructing the model to rely on it, grounding limits how much the model must guess. Requiring citations also lets people verify claims. It lowers hallucination risk but does not remove it entirely. **What is the difference between grounding and RAG?** Grounding is the goal: anchoring answers in real sources. Retrieval-augmented generation is one common technique for achieving it, by retrieving relevant content and adding it to the prompt. Grounding can also use live tool calls or structured data lookups. **How do sales teams ground AI-written outreach?** Feed the model verified account data, such as firmographics, recent events, and CRM history, require it to use only that data, and include source references. Reps then check the cited facts before sending.
