[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Growth pathways GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # Growth pathways In short Growth pathways are the separate routes through which a company can increase revenue. Common pathways include winning more customers in the current market, selling more to existing customers, entering new segments or regions, and launching new products. Naming pathways explicitly helps a GTM team decide where to put limited budget and rep time. Each pathway has different costs, risks, and time to payoff, so treating them as one blended "growth" goal hides trade-offs. ## Common growth pathways ### Core market penetration Sell more of the current product to the current type of customer. This is usually the lowest-risk pathway because the message, channels, and buyers are already known. ### Expansion Grow revenue inside existing accounts through upsell, cross-sell, and seat growth. It depends on retention and customer success as much as sales. ### New segments or regions Take the current product to a new industry, company size, or country. It needs new research on buyers, language, pricing, and compliance. ### New products or offers Sell something new to existing or new buyers. It carries the most uncertainty and usually needs a launch plan. --- ## How to choose between pathways Compare pathways on the same few criteria rather than on gut feel. * **Size of the opportunity:** Estimate how many accounts and how much revenue each pathway could realistically reach. * **Cost and effort:** Count the people, spend, and product work needed before the first dollar arrives. * **Time to payoff:** Expansion often pays back in months, while a new region may take several quarters. * **Risk:** Ask what you would have to be wrong about for the pathway to fail, and how cheaply you can test it. --- ## Example Say a team sells analytics software to US fintech companies. It maps four pathways: more US fintech logos, upselling existing customers to a premium tier, a pilot in UK fintech, and a new reporting add-on. It puts most effort into the first two, runs a small test in the UK, and delays the add-on until customers ask for it. --- ## Common mistakes * **Pursuing every pathway at once:** Spreading a small team across four routes means none gets enough attention to work. * **Ignoring existing customers:** Many teams over-invest in new logos while expansion is cheaper. * **No success test:** Define in advance what result would make you scale or stop a pathway. * **Confusing pathway with channel:** A pathway is where growth comes from. A channel is how you reach buyers. --- ## Growth pathways FAQs **What are growth pathways in business?** Growth pathways are the different routes a company can use to grow revenue, such as winning more customers in its current market, expanding within existing accounts, entering new segments or regions, or launching new products. Each route has its own cost and risk. **How do you choose the right growth pathways for your company?** Compare each route on opportunity size, cost, time to payoff, and risk. Favor pathways that build on what already works, run small tests on riskier ones, and set clear criteria for when to scale or stop each pathway. **What is the difference between growth pathways and a growth strategy?** A growth strategy is the overall plan for how a company will grow. Growth pathways are the specific routes inside that plan, such as expansion or a new region. A strategy chooses which pathways to pursue and in what order. **Can a company pursue several growth pathways at once?** Yes, but only if each has enough people and budget to be tested properly. Most small teams do better focusing on one or two pathways and running limited experiments on the rest.
