# GTM engineer

In short

A GTM engineer is a go-to-market professional who uses code, no-code tools, APIs, and AI to build and maintain the systems behind sales and marketing: enrichment, lead routing, outbound sequences, and signal-driven workflows.

The role sits between sales, marketing ops, and engineering. Where a RevOps analyst mostly configures and reports, a GTM engineer mostly builds new automated workflows. The role is relatively new, so titles and scope vary by company.

## What a GTM engineer does

* **Builds data flows:** Connects enrichment, CRM, and outreach tools through APIs and workflow platforms.
* **Automates research:** Creates workflows that gather account and contact context for reps.
* **Designs signal triggers:** Turns events such as job changes or funding into routed tasks or sequences.
* **Prototypes with AI:** Builds and tests AI agents for research and message drafting, with human review.
* **Measures results:** Tracks what the automations produce and fixes what breaks.

---

## Skills to look for

* **Technical:** Scripting (often Python or JavaScript), APIs, SQL, and workflow tools.
* **GTM literacy:** Understanding of ICPs, sequences, and pipeline stages.
* **Data judgment:** Knowing when data is trustworthy enough to act on.
* **Communication:** Translating between reps and systems.

---

## Example

Say reps spend an hour per account researching before outreach. A GTM engineer builds a workflow that pulls firmographics, recent news, and the matching persona list into the CRM record, then drafts a note for the rep to edit. The rep keeps judgment; the engineer removes the manual lookup.

---

## When to hire one

* **You have a repeatable motion:** Automating a motion nobody has proven wastes effort.
* **Manual work is the bottleneck:** Reps or ops spend large shares of time on copy-paste tasks.
* **Tools are many and disconnected:** Integration work is blocking progress.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Automating bad targeting:** Speed makes poor ICP definition worse.
* **No documentation:** Undocumented workflows break when the builder leaves.
* **No guardrails:** Volume without limits and review harms deliverability and brand.

## GTM engineer FAQs

**What does a GTM engineer do?**

A GTM engineer builds the automated systems behind sales and marketing, such as enrichment pipelines, signal-based triggers, routing, and AI-assisted research or outreach workflows, using code, APIs, and no-code tools. They connect tools and keep those workflows running.

**How is a GTM engineer different from a RevOps manager?**

RevOps usually owns process, CRM configuration, reporting, and forecasting. A GTM engineer focuses on building new automated workflows and integrations, often with code. The roles overlap, and some companies combine them.

**What skills do you need to become a GTM engineer?**

Useful skills include scripting in Python or JavaScript, working with APIs and SQL, using workflow automation tools, and understanding sales concepts like ICPs and pipeline. Judgment about data quality and clear communication with reps also matter.

**Is a GTM engineer a technical or sales role?**

It is a hybrid. The work is technical, but the goal is commercial: generating pipeline and improving rep productivity. Many GTM engineers sit in sales, marketing, or RevOps teams and come from either an operations or engineering background.
