[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) GTM plan GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # GTM plan In short A GTM plan is a working document that lists what the team will do, who will do it, by when, and what result is expected in order to bring a product to market. It is the execution layer under a go-to-market strategy. Where a strategy explains the choices, the plan assigns the work. It is usually reviewed weekly or monthly and updated as results come in. ## What a GTM plan contains * **Objectives:** Specific targets such as pipeline created, meetings booked, or customers won. * **Target accounts and personas:** The list or criteria used for outreach and campaigns. * **Messaging:** Key claims, proof points, and objections with answers. * **Channel activities:** Campaigns, outreach sequences, events, and partner work with schedules. * **Owners and budget:** A named person and a spending limit for each activity. * **Review cadence:** When progress is checked and who decides on changes. --- ## How to write a GTM plan ### 1. Start from the strategy Copy the segment, message, and motion decisions into the first page. The plan should not reopen them. ### 2. Break goals into weekly work Convert each target into activities. For example, a meetings target becomes a number of accounts contacted per week and a follow-up process. ### 3. Assign one owner per task Shared ownership usually means no ownership. Name one person for every line. ### 4. Define checkpoints Set dates to check leading indicators, such as reply rates, so problems appear early. --- ## An example timeline Say a launch plan covers 90 days. In the first month, the team builds the target list, finalizes messaging, and trains reps. In the second, outreach and campaigns begin. In the third, the team reviews conversion by stage and reallocates effort to the best-performing channel. --- ## Common mistakes * **Too many priorities:** A plan with twenty goals has none. * **No owners:** Tasks without names stall. * **Lagging metrics only:** Revenue appears late, so track activity and conversion earlier. * **Never updating:** A plan that ignores results becomes irrelevant within weeks. --- ## Plan vs. strategy The strategy sets direction and choices. The plan sets tasks, dates, and owners. --- ## GTM plan FAQs **What is a GTM plan?** A GTM plan is an actionable document that turns a go-to-market strategy into specific tasks, owners, budgets, timelines, and goals. It guides execution of a product launch or growth effort and is updated as results come in. **What should be in a GTM plan?** Include objectives, target accounts or personas, messaging, channel activities, owners, budget, timeline, and a review cadence. Each activity should have a named owner and a measurable result so progress can be checked regularly. **How is a GTM plan different from a GTM strategy?** A strategy defines the choices: who to target, what to say, and how to sell. A plan converts those choices into scheduled tasks with owners and budgets. The strategy changes rarely, while the plan is updated frequently. **How long should a GTM plan cover?** Many teams plan in 90-day blocks, which is long enough to show results and short enough to adjust. Longer launches can use a 12-month outline with detailed plans for each quarter, reviewed as new data arrives.
